Bellew-Haye

Post by Covfefe »

Yes. Another Haye Bellew thread. You're welcome. :TU:

Looking at how one sided this fight is considered to be, and I agree with the consensus, should this fight even be happening? No title, literally nothing on the line. Should it have been allowed?

Bellew could get seriously hurt in there, and it offers neither fighter anything of note. It seems almost pointless.

What do we think?

No. Hearn flogging a domestic 'bad blood' rivalry despite 1 fighter being overmatched against an opponent in a heavier division.

That been said, Brook-Golovkin was worse.

Can't disagree with any of that.

Golovkin-Brook is as cynical a fight I've ever seen made. Brook had choices and fights at 147 why throw the lad to the wolves like that? Completely unnecessary and potentially career damaging. Shocking promoting.

This fight for me is similarly cynical.

Yes it should have been made. And not just because I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the obnoxious Bellew flattened and humbled.

Professional boxing's unlike most sports in that it doesn't have a pre determined set of participants who agree to take part in a series of matches to determine the winner of a tournament or league. Boxers are prizefighters for whom the prize isn't the tournament win it's the cash and as such any fight that there's a market for can and usually will be made.

It's not even that big a mismatch. Plenty of fights take place each month where the favourite is shorter odds than Haye is, nobody says those fights shouldn't be happening.

I can appreciate a lot of that but I would counter with the fact that few fighters, when they're up against the odds, are facing someone as destructive as Haye. The man has, or at least had, real power that could do some damage to Bellew. You are right that we see a lot of fights that are skewed towards the promoters fighter but how often do you see a fight where you worry about the health of the opponent?

I take your point but in terms of the health factors the received wisdom seems to be moving towards the opinion that taking a prolonged beating over the course of a fight is more injurious to a fighter's health than being brutally KOd by a big shot early doors. Obviously there are tragic exceptions to that rule but to go back to an example from my childhood would it not have been better for Ali's long term health for Holmes to have knocked him out in the 1st round with a big shot rather than have his jab sickeningly pound into Ali's face for 8 or 10 rounds or however long it lasted.

I expect Boomer to get hammered in this fight. However, there is not much weight difference in the fight and it is clearly not as much of a mismatch as Haye's last 2 fights, or his fight against Audley

Current cruiserweight WBC champ V fighter max 15 lbs heavier who after returning from injury and a long lay off, has fought 3 rounds against 2 poor opponents.

On paper at least it's no mismatch.

Paper means nowt though. Boomer's getting shellacked

Agree with this. I'm not worried about Bellew's health, I expect him to be knocked out in two rounds, with minimal accumulation of punishment.

His ego, on the other hand, I'm rather looking forward to seeing doused in petrol and set alight.

Agreed, I doubt anyone involved fully believed they'd win

The fight made me angry and so did the responses such as Brook would've won if he hadn't had his orbital bone broken by the punches of Golovkin.

First time Golovkin opened up with two fisted attacks Brook was sending out distress signal body language and the corner bailed him out.

If these two put on anything less than the second coming of Kaylor-Christie or Eubank-Benn I they're going to look silly or disappoint many people.

Personally I dont think this fight should have been made but people will look at the attention its getting and say that speaks for itself. For me all the attention basically just proves once again that grudge matches still create interest.

Sky and Matchroom are willing to create a wrestling style promotion to sell PPVs and as long as that continues to work these fights will continue to happen.

Doesn't anyone remember the Bellew bluster before he went into ultra cautious mode against "the midget" Adonis Stevenson ?

Now what do people expect he's going to do against a much bigger puncher like Haye ?

I have no problem with the fight being made as everyone's making a bit of money out of it.

Also for Haye it's a keep busy fight and a needed boost to the profile to secure AJ in the summer.

For Bellew his other choice was Briedis who's the dangernan of the CW division but generates very little money.

The only negative aspect from my point of view is the lack of a undercard from a PPV perspective (Matchroom special if they value the main event)
Also the pantomime press conferences that should of been stopped or had common sense applied by either BBBoC/Matchroom/Hearn.

My above post contains a accidental spelling mistake but as it's about Bellew it's actually quite apt.

A few people on here are picking Bellew (emphatically not me), so perhaps it's not as one-sided as the majority think?

Regardless, I know plenty of people who are planning on buying it despite being complete casuals and never even having heard of Bellew until a few weeks ago, so commercially it's a no-brainer.

I votwd yes because bellew chased it hard feom the moment he won the world title. Im not sure what caused him to beliece that he had the beating of him listening to the sparing story where bellew was sparring then jumped out to let price in who gave haye trouble and he jumped bqck in. So a fresh fighter, jumped in with someone 6/7 rounds down with 2 fighters and wobbled him.

But bellew wanted it and gtlot it
