GGG Jacobs - disappointed?

Post by Wales »

Was anyone a little disappointed in the fight tonight?

I enjoyed it, but have to say it didn't live up to expectations as a fight. I envisaged either a good old fashioned scrap, or a conclusive boxing clinic.

Expected more from Thurman Garcia and GGG Jacobs tbh.

no, it was probably my favourite fight of the year so far. jacobs' movement and tactics were fantastic to watch, and that combined with ggg's capacity to end the fight at any moment made for great action. i thought jacobs won it, but it was a great fight either way. ggg fights are boring in an exciting way - if that makes sense - because it's usually just a case of waiting to see how long the other fella can last, but jacobs was outboxing him, outsmarting him and landing some great shots throughout the fight. i loved it.

See where you're coming from. Million percent. Down to the individual and can't deny it was on a knife edge. Just, being honest, I don't share the love. Loving it while he was Outboxing outsmarting and landing great shots throughout makes me think of Hopkins Pavlik or calzaghe lacy.

I just, well, expected fireworks, or a dominant performance.

Maybe just me, and my expectations :TU:

Nah, I'm with you 100%. Disappointed in GGG more than Jacobs as expected far more from him in terms of cutting off the ring and forcing the pace. Seemed like he just couldn't get set against Jacobs and didn't let his hands go accordingly. Least body punching I've ever seen from him.

It was too scrappy. The winner was not truly revealed. This will need a rematch. Perhaps in the Winter?

because jacobs wouldnt let him cut off the ring or get set. to do that so beautifully for so long is an artform. there were a couple of moments when ggg upped the pace and thats when you just thought, for all of jacobs' hard work he could be out of here wi nowt to show for it!

Disappointed but as GGG says 'this is boxing'. He's probably a victim of his own success. Jacobs made it difficult and stayed disciplined. GGG not urgent enough and showed Jacobs too much respect.

Said it in another thread but I thought GGG looked tentative even on the way to the ring. Didn't look himself last night but massive credit to Jacobs.

Really enjoyed this fight but I think two of the score cards had it extremely wide !

I agree with you. It just never caught fire. IMO Golvkin didn't want to trade punches he wanted to pot shot a win. Jacobs hurt him to the body. I had it Danny by 2

Interesting, Tomasino, you are the first person to suggest that. I was unable to catch the fight last night. I have always felt that 3G's weakness (if you can sincerely classify it that way) is his body.

Yup think we expect GGG to knock everyone out,he is believing all he has to do is touch someone on the chin and they fall but jacobs was too smart for GGG and i think jacobs should of got the decision. You cant win a fight by just walking forward eating jabs all night. It was a close fight but jacobs gets the nod from me

The main thought I got from the fight was how much bigger Jacobs looked than GGG. Shame he r fused the fight day weigh, I reckon he would've been 13 1/2 stone easy.

He looked 3 weight divisions bigger r

We can put to bed the idea that GGG would beat Ward, now, yes? All of us but Riddick probably, anyway

I thought Jacobs won it but after what happened earlier
with gonzales they were never going to end 2 legacies in one night

I had it GGG by 1 round, i wanted Jacobs to win and found many of the rounds very hard to score. Probably why i favoured the aggressor. Also thought Glolovkin landed more shots in general as well as more power punches.

Great thread, cos it got me thinking......
At first I was disappointed, GGG didn't live up to howI perceived the fight would go. Then, reading this, I thought this was a good fight as I then appreciated Jacobs work. Then I thought, was Jacobs robbed ?.
So, to sum up, I am not sure !!!. I haven't a bloody clue :brick: .
Good undercard though !!!!.

Certainly showed GGG wanted to set up single power punches he became flat footed in close , and he did have a reculance to want to trade , Jacobs movement of body , not allowing GGG to set himself was great to watch ,, who else thinks Jacobs would do a Mayweather and show Canelo up, which to be honest is a fight i would like to see just has much has GGG - Canelo

:TU: pretty much this except that I didn't score it when watching but just felt GGG tipped it slightly and the k/d was probably the clincher on the cards. Lederman had it a draw I think but the k/d was the difference and thats good enough for me. Has to be Canelo v GGG next, the timing is perfect if he comes through vs JCC Jr and Jacobs can come again most definitely but I don't want the rematch immediately, just let this one lie for now . . .

Gennady seemed reluctant to throw the right. I did wonder if he had broken it early on or had an injury. See if anything comes out.

Good fight.

I had Jacobs winning. I thought he outworked GGG.

The beauty of GGG KO ratio has always been that he did it behind his boxing. Rarely loaded up, jabbed well but had the freakish power that stopped people in their tracks.

Saturday was the first time I've seen him load up so often and early. Got the impression that he'd studied Jacobs and got the impression he was chinny and could be taken out with relative ease.
Jacobs had fantastic footwork and showed good whiskers.
Every fighter has a bad performance maybe this is just GGGs.

I'd now love to see Pirog back in the mix.

Golovkin can be workmanlike. He still scored a knockdown which usually seals a close fight, if there really was any doubt. Think people are overrating Jacobs a little, because he did better than expected. Often people react to the flashy shifty guy, also.

Glad Golovkin had a hard fight, a good test. Jacobs is definitely a hardened pro now - he's grown from that blow out defeat to the excellent Dmitry Pirog.
