De La Hoya: Chances for Canelo-GGG decreased after Golovkin’s latest performance

According to the LA Times, discussions to stage a fall fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez will resume this week. But don’t hold your breath on a deal being struck as promoter Oscar De La Hoya makes it clear that Golovkin’s narrow points win over Daniel Jacobs this past weekend did absolutely nothing to raise his value in negotiations.

That in and of itself could prove to be a sticking point in making the fight happen since De La Hoya indicates that he’s even less likely to increase his offer to Golovkin after his latest performance.

“Not that [Golovkin’s value] went down,” De La Hoya said. “I just feel that given today’s market, I really feel that GGG’s side has to be more than fair to make this fight.

“I actually believe [the percentages of making the fight] decrease. It all depends on the negotiations – and we’ll continue talks – but now obviously we clearly know who the ‘A’ side is and that’s obviously Canelo. So I’m going to instruct my president, Eric Gomez, to continue talks and, hopefully, it can get done, but I strongly feel Canelo is obviously the ‘A’ side and there’s no doubt about it.”

When asked for his thoughts on the Golovkin-Jacobs fight De La Hoya mentions that Jacobs made the crucial mistake of giving Golovkin too much respect during the opening rounds - something he believes cost Jacobs the fight. He says that with Jacobs being in tip-top shape he should have been more confident in his ability to take Golovkin’s punch and stand toe-to-toe with him more often...And of course De La Hoya say his fighter Canelo Alvarez would never make that mistake.

Now look, Golden Boy’s hard line stance about Golovkin’s maxed-out leverage isn’t going bode well for the prospects of a Canelo-Golovkin fight coming together. Of course if you believe, like many, that Golden Boy doesn't want the Golovkin fight in the first place - well then, this news should hardly be surprising.

This isn't much more than a negotiating tactic. Bottom line is that Golovkin has trouble selling more than about 150k PPV buys, while Canelo can do 2x that fighting a nobody, and 4-6x that with a big name opponent like Khan or Cotto. So if this fight is going to happen, Golovkin is probably going to have to take the short money, even though he is the champ.

To be fair to DLH, I agree that GGG has to be way less demanding in the negotiations... Canelo is the main PPV draw as demonstrated by the poor 150k PPV buys GGG-Jacobs did.

This is gonna turn into a May-Pac situation where everybody is clamoring for a fight which won't happen when it should and we'll be made to wait until both fighters are past their best.

Oscar should know better than this. Let's not talk about A and B sides until Canelo completes his end of the deal with Chavez Jr. What happens if Canelo loses to a highly motivated Chavez Jr with the pride of Mexico on the line? Canelo is the C side of negotiations in that case.

Here's a thought Oscar, SHUT THE F UP. You already made your boy look like the biggest Pu*sy in boxing by vacated the title and running away from that mandatory. WE ALL KNOW that you were waiting for GGG to show signs of slowing down to give your fighter a better shot at winning. You finally saw the evidence you needed and now you want to say how brave Canelo is and how he'll come right at GGG and not show him respect? CANELO VACATED THE LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE TO AVOID FIGHTING GGG, HE ALREADY RETREATED...then you have the balls to discount Jacobs efforts saying that he gave too much respect early on in the fight? Go screw. Jacobs did better than anyone has and deserves a ton of credit for the effort. Don't criticize a fighter's effort in there when you and your boy didn't even have the balls to do it.
