Was Mike Tyson (Cus/Rooney) The Greatest Fighter That Ever Lived?

Post by bnovelist »

The Tyson that fought under Cus and Rooney had zero flaws in his game. Made all of his fights look easy, threw combos, and was very difficult to

hit when he employed the peek-a-boo. Tyson was a complete wrecking ball. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG2B90evafc

Love Tyson. Brought unparalleled excited to heavyweight boxing imo. In his book he stated he received a fine from the wbc for wearing black trunks when the champion had already chosen to wear black, but he thought "fornicate him"

If you believe his words in his book Tyson believed he was already on the decline by the time he fought for the title, as when cus passed he was already taking cuts in trading that he weren't before. The title was one last big effort for cus

Tyson was awesome 4yr absence from the sport his comeback fight was a sellout McNeely. Guys like Chavez & Trinidad were fighting on his

undercard and this was a comebacking Tyson to see if he still had it.

So are you saying and telling me that Tyson under Rooney was no match for Lennox Lewis under Steward? How can you say that? Tyson under Cus

& Rooney looked supernatural.

Okay explain this! When Tyson lost the world shook up! People all over the world could not believe that Mike Tyson lost. When Lennox lost to

McCall only the die hard fans called it an upset, the casual cared less. But it wasn't that way with Tyson! When Tyson lost they played it over, over,

and over again as "The Biggest Upset" people didn't care with Lennox lost.

You are right speaking about popularity, Tyson was/is more popular than Lewis.
Lewis (boxer) was a level above Tyson, he has proved this, obviously....

How did Lennox RIGHTFULLY prove by besting at 37yr old washed Tyson who had previously taking a 4yr layoff? How is this? Imagine Lewis not

boxing for 4yrs straight then attempting a comeback....his entire story would be different as well...

I like Lennox Lewis, I really like Tyson though. But man crushes aside. Purely on boxing.

If they fought around the around Mikes peak, it's no contest as Lewis was only around European standard.

If the fought early 90s, 91 ish post buster Douglas, if still have fancied Mike though he'd have to have his head screwed on and ditch the girls and drugs. Lewis was really quite an open fighter which was great but a guy with mikes attacking game I'd be confident he'd be too quick for him.

They did fight in Lennox peak, and Lennox hammered him. An easy beat down. But the fight does not settle "who was the best" as Mike was so far past it, he was pretty much shot imo. It was only his power that kept him around the top guys, and name, his boxing had gone.

Who gets rated higher in history. It's a pick em really. Lewis is a bit marmite, but so is Tyson. There's not much inbeteeen for fans concerning these 2.

I'd say late 80s Tyson is a bear complete wrecking ball of a fighter. But to answer the original question. He isn't the greatest, as I said earlier he peaked so early in his career and his absolute best didn't last long enough. Ali etc had near 2 decades at the top.

But late 80s Tyson gives anyone in history hell for sure

Prime Tyson gets into the wheelhouse of prime Foreman and gets fraziere'd.

You couldn't intimidate Foreman.

It completely contradicts the last sentence on my previous post (anyone in history - anyone is exaggeration), but I agree Big George is all wrong for Mike.

Evander was so much stronger mentally that Mike that I see that too. But when Tyson was able to throw the fast combinations in his prime, I don't completely write him off in that match up

No I don't believe he was but I do believe that he would have beaten the man I consider to be the greatest Heavyweight of all time had they met at their peaks (discussed in the Eugene Hill thread - don't laugh - in case anyone cares)

A better question in my opinion would be : Is Mike Tyson the most exciting Heavyweight who ever lived?

or even ...

Is Mike Tyson the most intimidating Heavyweight (no offense George) who ever lkved?

Yes, Mike Tyson is the most exciting HW, considering last 50 years.
No, Mike Tyson is not the most intimidating HW, considering last 50 years. I has rewatched some fights of young and vicious Foreman, and the right answer is here.

I wouldn't argue that one either way but I'll tell you about one fighter who wasn't remotely intimidated by young George, took him to a points decision, made a monkey of him at times, gave him very valuable experience, and won my undying admiration in the process, all this despite being little more than a light-havyweight.

I give you the brave, the skillful, and the sadly long departed Gregorio "Goyo" Peralta.

Last week I watched the fight for the first time in forty-seven years, just to make sure I hadn't exaggerated his performance in my memory. If you never heard of him, check out the fight on you-tube. I don't think you'll regret it.

Mike was definitely entertaining, but evander had the greatest fights.
