Erik Morales or Juan Manuel Marquez?

Post by FanMan87 »

Who do you rank higher? Kind of a hard choice but I pick Marquez for consistency.

It's razor thin but I have JMM edging it.

Very very close but I think my first answer is that Morales win over PAC may shade it for him, notwithstanding my man crush on JMM

Probably JMM but personally I preferred watching Morales. Pity they never met in the ring. I was a massive Barrera fan as a boy so preferred him over the two of em even though he has losses to both.

It's pretty tight, I'd probably have to give Marquez the slightly higher ranking, Erik would have beat him though.

I thought you'd have had Erik all the way. Would have been a great fight.

Marquez late run is tough to ignore.

It is indeed. His skill seen him through some tough encounters at 135. Morales showed some skill and grit during his comeback, although I found it painful to watch at times.

The maidana fight might be my all time favorite. I'm pretty sure it's the only fight that ever made me cry.

Marquez.

I thought he outboxed Pac to a decision in III, then he starched him.

His fights from 135 up have been great too.

I have the utmost respect for both fighters. Erik Morales is one of my all time favorites, but I'd have to give the slight edge to Marquez. Both had stellar careers, but like Saad said the run Marquez put together late in his career is hard to ignore.

In my opinion Marquez is at least 2-2 with Pac (I felt he won the 3rd fight). Then you got the Fight of the Year with Juan Diaz, the wins over Joel Casamayor, Michael Katsidis, Marco Antonio Barrera

Plus most of Marquez's losses other than the Mayweather loss were all pretty damn close fights that could've conceivably went either way (a fact that Marquez was sure to let you know about).

Both are great fighters and I figure 1st ballot Hall of Famers (Speaking of which Erik's year of eligibility should be approaching huh). It's a shame we never got to see them head to head at 126 or 130. Would've been a barnburner.

JMM may have a career that can be considered ever so slightly shinier.....

But mutual primes, I believe Morales would beat him.

I prefer MAB to both of them but his career would probably not quite match theirs....but in my opinion his abilities do.

Definitely. It was a great era for that weight range. 126 and 130 was red hot when these 3 guys and Pac were all fighting each other in their primes.

I guess Barrera wasn't quite at his best anymore for his fight with Marquez, but he was still very sharp and made a competitive fight of it.

Barrera also beat Morales too. And I thought the Marquez fight was closer than they made it out to be while Barrera was cheated out of a KD.

Prime for prime i'd side with Morales but Marquez has the longevity though, I know Erik had success late in his career too but he only picked up a vacant title and was a shell of himself I would've loved to have seen them share a ring though, Marquez carried on through the weights better

Yeah twice :bag: I thought Barrera won their first meeting but it was that good a fight you couldn't complain.

Yeah you're right the JMM was closer than made out although the right guy won.

Juan Manuel Marquez solidified his top 100 ATG pound per pound ranking when he stopped cold the great Manny Pacquiao in 6 rounds. He was the Pacman's most difficult opponent.

Erik Morales in my view, is a borderline top 100 ATG pound per pound boxer. It would not be bad if in some lists he is a top 100 ATG pound per pound fighter. At least, he got an argument in the top 100 than the overrated Lennox Lewis.
