Fr&nk allegedly back with a bang?

Post by chad »

I've been reading a lot recently that allegedly is a promoter stuck in the past, unable to keep up with with modern promoting. He's not embracing social media and finding it difficult to create a buzz for his events and reach the masses.

allegedly himself stated that way too much of his time was being taken up trying to keep B0xnati0n going as an entity. This distracted him from being able to make and promote fights with the required dedication and drive. He also stated the link up with BT Sport has removed the shackles allowing him to focus on what he does best....boxing.

I follow Fr&nk on Twitter. I'm not on Facebook so I have no idea what goes on there. For the past month Fr&nk has been tweeting about this weekends card in Manchester, and the fighters on the bill, like never before. He's also been retweeting almost everything about the card being posted by news outlets, boxing magazines, fighters on the card etc... The past 48 hours have been the busiest I've ever seen him.

There's been speculation that tickets aren't selling well, which seems to stem from a throw away Tweet from Eddie Hearn about 2 weeks ago suggesting only 400 tickets had been sold. It's not going to be a sell out however I can't see what more Fr&nk could do to get the event out there. His fighters have had decent TV, radio and press coverage in the past 2 weeks:

Nicola Adams has been on BBC Breakfast, BBC Look North, BBC Radio 4, BBC Leeds and 5 Live Sport.
Liam Smith has been on Talk Sport, Radio City, the pitch at Anfield and in the Liverpool Echo.
Terry Flanghan has been on 5 Live Sport, BBC Radio Manchester, the pitch at the Etihad Stadium.
Paul Butler has been on Radio City and Jack Catterall in the Chorley Guardian.
All of the fighters, including Daniel Dubious, have featured strongly in interviews with the BBC in their respective local regions.
Fr&nk allegedly has been pushing the card and his fighters in the Daily Star over the past few weeks.

In terms of additional exposure Fr&nk landed 2 new chief sponsers in 32 Red and Footasylum who have taken to social media to promot their links with allegedly and the upcoming event. BT Sport and B0xnati0n have been producing plenty of videos between them on YouTube over the past 3 weeks, about 30 in total, building up the event and fighters. Fr&nk also invested in 2 promo videos for the event to be shot. 2 of the best promo videos I've seen for British boxing in recent years.

Move into this week where Fr&nk has organised a week long series of open to the public events like sparring, press conference, the weigh in etc...

It's been a long time since I've seen Fr&nk put so much time and effort into a show. There's signs that other upcoming shows like Walsh Vs. David and Warrington Vs. Martinez are going to get the same treatment. It won't be an over night success but I'm seeing signs that the ship is turning slowly. With the link up with BT and Eir Sport in Ireland these up coming shows will get more exposure than anything allegedly put on in the past 6 years. The production and presentation from BT will be key in selling these as big time events.

The next couple of months will be an intresting watch.

Admittedly I don't live in Manchester or Liverpool but I haven't seen a single bit of coverage. it's only because of this forum I know this card is occurring.

It isn't exactly the kind of card that will generate interest from casuals.

Lets see what the event management is like on the night before we start talking about comebacks.

Same here. Seen nothing at all

If anything the original post kinda proves the reverse of the thread title. If he is putting that much effort in and no one is sharing it, talking about it, buying tickets then you kinda don't have many places left to go

I find it hard to believe it's purely off this forum you've heard of it.

There's been plenty stories across every major and minor boxing news outlet. So unless you're without any Social Media and watch/visit purely Sky Sports channels, then that's really the only way.

Well, if Jack Catterall has been in the Chorley Guardian I'm surprised anyone is able to get a seat at all...

Seriously though I think the issue with this card is Flanagan. Yes he's a world champion in his home town, but he's barely known inside it never mind out and he's fighting a guy nobody has heard of. The public aren't stupid; Terry's a 1/7 shot to win the fight and all the talk of toughest tests won't convince people who've never seen Petrov that he's much cop.

The Smith v Williams fight feels more like a headiner and would have done much better in Liverpool or Wales. For all the promotional talk that is mentioned in the first post you have to ask questions about how this has sold; the number of tickets available and simply given away seem massive.

It saddens me like a card like this isn't sold out, or near to it. They need glitz, glamour and ridiculous hype to get some people on board. With the amount of fights you'd expect each fighter to have sold a good amount individually to make it look good, that's what it seems Frank was after, but so far not so good from what I hear.

It's funny because, this card in comparison to say, Burns/Indongo, is sensational. But the hype is real and The Rickster is a sort of Sky household name, my mate loves Ricky Burns but doesn't really know Liam Williams. I've watched Smith & Flanagan with him in the past.

Unfortunately Daniel Dubois might have to wait for the backing I hoped he'd get upon his debut.
Will Nicola Adams bring extra viewership? I hope so.

It shouldn't. Crolla and Quigg double bills live on Sky with Eddie giving it the big one don't sell out Manchester Arena either, so there's no reason why this should either. The Arena is way too big, which has always been a problem for any fight here.

Agree. The problem most arenas have (through no-ones fault) is that the big fights sell out too easily, and the majority of fights just can't fill half of it.

It's a shame, but thats the way it is.

Do people on here not follow boxers/FW/B0xnati0n on Twitter? My timeline has been full of promos for this show.

If the arena is 3/4 full, that's around 15k, which is more than most arenas hold. It's forgotten that Manchester Arena is the biggest in the UK outside the O2.

Can certainly point a finger at Frank and ask why it wasn't at an alternative location that would be full, but from their financial standpoint, if they're projecting rightly or wrongly say 17k, where else could they go?

My timeline has been bombarded with promotions of this show! But, it's good to see. Ticket sales won't transform over night for FW, but, BT have certainly got behind this show and if we want boxing to improve in the UK, BT needs to be a big player.

Ticket sales for Langford and the Walsh fights are actually going well, Walsh in particular with only £40 and £60 tickets left.

The MA is a very difficult sell, don't quote me on this but I'm sure the Joshua Molina fight wasn't a total sell out.

Top quality card but it will take time before ticket sales gets to the levels of Matchroom.Wazza is in the best position he has been for years and hopefully Saturday's show goes well, the echo might of been the most suitable venue for this card through.

I agree but completely understand why this is on in a 'neutral' venue. Ideally, I think this would have been at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, 7,500 and it would have quite easily sold out.

I thought the Motorpoint was less around 5000;still it should be a top night anyway.

He also needs the fighters in fairness. Flanagan is a quiet guy who doesn't stop many opponents and seems to have a fairly small fanbase. Saunders barely fights anymore and seems to be largely disliked/unknown by the wider public. (Let's face it, rightly or wrongly Joe public doesn't like gypsies.) Warrington sells well in Leeds, but after that?

His stable looks a bit second rate. Some on here seem to blame this purely on Matchroom, but plenty of the biggest names in British boxing aren't with them. Yes, Joshua, Brook, DeGale and Bellew are well known, but so are Haye, Khan, Fury and Frampton, and none of those are promoted by Frank.

Ultimately the promotion and press could go perfectly and I still think you'd have a hard time doing serious numbers for a Terry Flanagan v big outsider headliner.

I don't think Khan would sell out an arena over here if his next fight was here. His last fight over here, they gave tickets away.

Frampton does unbelievably well and Haye conned a load of people for his awful comeback fights but, they sold well.

Tyson Fury is well known but does he sell tickets? Hennessy couldn't fill the Manchester Arena for the Klitschko rematch.

I suppose that's the problem though,

I was talking at work today about the boxing this weekend....no one and I do mean no one had any clue there was any boxing on.

We know, but the causals don't...they really don't

I accept a lot of that - Fury doesn't sell despite being well known, but Haye really can't be faulted for shifting tickets. He was doing very well at the O2 fighting dross with pretty much no undercard.

That said, Frank doesn't have much of an angle with what he's got. It's all good trade fights and WBO paper champions. The post above suggests casual fans don't know there's a fight on and it's true. But if you want to be selling arena tickets they need to know it's on and you need a fighter with wider appeal.

Hatton was a man of the people likely lad. Joshua is an Olympic champion and knocks everyone out. Haye is pretty much a celebrity boxer. Khan was built into a household name. What can you do with Flanagan? Keep telling anyone who'll listen that he's class and keep serving up Cruz/Mathews?

Are you not on social media and not a BT or BN subscriber? If not, you probably won't see much.
Na not on twitter, get my sports news from a combination of the guardian, watching the news, forums, and skysports. I've got BT sports but don't really watch it other than for football.

Surely Twitter doesn't spread news to the general public as it's only being pushed by boxing specific media. Until you get general media talking about it, the interest will be limited.

I am a bit of a part time fan these days, more interest in bigger fights, and don't get BN delivered anymore. But if I'm not interested, the man down the pub definitely won't be.
