Mayweather vs. Lomachenko - Head to Head Stat Comparison

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Vasyl Lomachenko has amassed a plus/minus rating of +20.7 in his last 8 fights. That's the highest rating since Floyd Mayweather's +24.5 after the Andre Berto fight. CompuBox compares the stats of Mayweather & Lomachenko in 10 categories to see how they match up.

Vasyl Lomachenko's +20.7 plus/minus rating is the highest since Floyd Mayweather's +24.5 following the Berto fight. Floyd's higher plus/minus rating is bolstered by his 43.4% total punch connect pct. Loma is the busier fighter and landed more total and power punches per round. Both landed more than half their power punches.

Their defensive stats are very similar. Lomachenko, 8-1 as a pro, has been in tough since his second pro fight, but it's way too early to effectively compare their careers-- just their skills in ten CompuBox categories. - OTC (opponents total connect percentage) OPC- (opponents power connect percentage). Plus/minus determined by subtracting opponents connect pct. from listed fighters connect percentage.

How were these stats formulated?

Vasyl Lomachenko has competed in only nine fights over a 3½ period of time, losing one of them.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has won every single one of his 49 of his bouts over a career spanning roughly twenty years, with 29 of them being world championship bouts (incl. lineal/Ring).

Since June 2005, Money May possesses a 17-fight consecutive winning streak against former world champions. 24 of his victories have come against 22 former world champions. Floyd has also gained world titles in five weight divisions (super featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight & light middleweight).

Assuming these CompuBox stats are based on the entirety of the careers of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Vasyl Lomachenko, then this means that they are utterly meaningless!

The article you've quoted says the following:

Are you saying you assume that CompuBox has tracked all 49 of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fights?

And why would you assume that these stats are based on the entirety of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s career when the table clearly states that only 15 of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fights have been tracked?

I have to admit, I didn’t see the fifteen figure in brackets, but regardless, the very first question detailed in my post remains valid.

Which fifteen Mayweather fights do these CompuBox stats refer to?

Even if it’s the most recent fifteen, the comments in my original post remains true.

I never made assumptions, but CompuBox stats cannot be accurate if they’re only using samples, especially comparing samples of different sizes. And the careers of Lomachenko & Mayweather cannot be compared at this point in time, so a comparison of their entire resumes would still be invalid.

Where is the logic to compare eight fights of Lomachenko versus fifteen bouts of Mayweather, for two men that compete in different weight classes?

If CompuBox calculated Floyd Mayweather’s stats using his most recent fifteen fights, then they have to be reviewed in the context of the quality of opposition faced:
• Five were top-ten ranked pound-for-pounders at the time he faced them (Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley; Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao)
• Five are dead-cert first ballot Hall-of-Famers (Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley; Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao)
• All fifteen opponents were world champions during their careers
• Two are currently ranked in the top-ten pound-for-pound list and are also current world title holders (Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao)
• Ten held world titles in multiple weight divisions (Zab Judah; Juan Manuel Marquez; Ricky Hatton; Oscar De La Hoya; Manny Pacquiao; Marcos Maidana; Saul Alvarez; Robert Guerrero; Miguel Cotto; and Shane Mosley)

Are any of the last eight men that Lomachenko has faced that should be considered better than any of the best ten of Floyd’s last fifteen opponents?

Sounds like your taking a statistical comparison Verbatim. Like it really means something.

Agreed, but I'm curious as to how CompuBox gathered these stats and the superficially-illogical reasoning for their comparison.

Dayum.

Well, if you trust compustats, Loma is more defensive while being more active than Floyd. Go figure. But, this is if you don't consider compustats a pile of poo. I feel it gives the appropriate perspective though.

Compubox or whatever they call that crap...GTFOH. It should not be mentioned on a legit boxing site other than how it was created for non boxing fans to have something to talk about.

It amazes me in the world of internet Boxing sites that fans who argue over every little thing with each other consider guys pressing a button as gospel. I was so pissed when Showtime joined the nonsense. I don't remember the fight but out of nowhere Bernstein was shilling punch stats like the be all end all.

I quite never understood how they define a power punch landed. Or how many power punches they calculate have landed. In most fights I certainly don't see that many power punches they claim to have been thrown or landed.

HBO pay a license fee to CompuBox to use their stats, so if they can cite facts and figures to promote the idea that one of their fighters is better than an all-time-great, purely for marketing purposes, then they’ll do so… regardless as to however silly their claims may be to the hard-core boxing fraternity.
