"Parker may need to fight Hughie Fury next, not Bellew"

“Fury is the mandatory,” WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo told www.stuff.co.nz “The injury has been proven by documentation submitted to the WBO. We don’t know the severity of it or if it’s a hoax. But he does have proof from a doctor that he was injured and that’s legitimate for us to declare him as still the mandatory. Parker has to defend the title against Fury within 120 days.”

This probably scuppers plans for Deontay Wilder or Tony Bellew being Joseph Parker's next opponent.

Thoughts?

Good. Bellew shouldn't even be getting WBF world title shots let alone from a legit organization.

I'd really like this fight to happen and was gutted at the cancellation.
But as for it happening in NZ?
This Duco drama might put paid to that. Small country syndrome and there is not the money. Also Parker's major sponsor Burger King has pulled out.
So the only other way is the UK, as neither fighter has a big enough profile in the USA..
Fingers crossed. It should be entertaining if Fury is in good health.

If AJ or Wilder or Wlad would fight him, Parker should skip Hughie, imo. He can always fight Hughie on the way back down. Cash in now.

I do agree with this. FWIW I favor Hughie to beat Parker and if I'm right then he's best served by taking whichever fight gives him the most money. He can always fight Fury in the future but AJ and Wilder won't always be there for him.

I really want to see Parker fight Hughie and I was gutted the fight got called off.

I can't get excited about Bellew fighting anyone because you know it's going to be his cash-out fight whoever the opponent is. Even if it's a fight worth seeing, it's still the end of the story, no progression, no next challenge to fire our imaginations. He's looking for a last payday before riding off into the sunset. Fair play to him but from a purely selfish viewpoint, why should I care about the result?

At this point I'm way more interested in the likes of Nick Webb, Nathan Gorman, Daniel Dubois etc because they have a future in the game and are on an upward trajectory.

Why would Bellew retire after his next fight regardless of whether he wins or loses?

He's got the Haye rematch payday and the return to cruiserweight payday waiting for him.

You're way more interested in a bunch of Area level fighters?

Do you lose interest in all fighters as they near the end of their careers?

Weird attitude.

He said he had a backinjury, that's very hard to proof, but at the same time very hard to proof wrong. If you break an arm, or tore a muscle, it's easely visable, but pain in your back? Allmost always impossible to see, or proof wrong and allmost all docters could guess whatever they like to.

Question 1: I've listened to him quite a bit recently. It's clear from what he says that his wife is keen for him to quit, he's not enjoying it like he used to, he was seriously considering hanging them up after beating Haye. I don't believe everything a boxer says but it seems clear to me he's looking at one last payday. Of course if he were to win as he did against Haye that might cause him to review his options, but if he manages to land a UK fight against Wilder I don't see that as a serious consideration. Haye's return to fitness might cause a rethink too but I'm inclined to think it's all about the money now.

Q2: No, I'm interested in fighters with potential whether they be currently area level or even quality amateurs turning pro. If I think area level is the limit of their potential I'm far less interested but not totally uninterested.

Q3: Not necessarily but when it seems clear to me that they have lost their motivation or it's fuelled pretty much by the idea of topping up the pension pot then my interest does wane, yes.

Q4: If you still think so, you are of course entitled to your opinion. I've been called worse.

Hughie should be made to wait. Go and fight someone with a pulse then maybe have a shot. I don't think he had any intention on fighting Parker at the weekend.
