Whatever happened to Georgi Kandelaki?
Ok he wasn't going to be special, but I saw him live and Frank Maloney had him at the time.
I thought he could maybe challenge for Euro title (if Georgia is counted as EBU?)

Anyway he just retired out of the blue it seems (does anyone know any different?) unbeaten in 24 with 18 Kos.....was there any reason?

Man City sold him to Ajax in 1998. Sad day

Re: Whatever happened to Georgi Kandelaki?
I don't know why Kandelaki retired but after his boxing career he founded the Georgian Professional Boxing Association and became its president.
He trains young boxers in his home village of Variani in Georgia.

Re: Whatever happened to Georgi Kandelaki?
I think he quit because he was struggling with the weight and discipline in general. After quitting he briefly joined in Georgian politics. But mostly he is involved with Georgian pro scene with his gym in Variani, both things are in a terrible shape. Kandelaki gym is also a place where lots of suspicious/fake match ups take place.
Re: Whatever happened to Georgi Kandelaki?
I'm sure he retired due to a detached retina if I recall correctly. He wasnt anything special, he was a stand out amateur but
he never looked like he was going to make waves as a pro despite being unbeaten hence why he was so protected.

Interview with him in 2006
Q: Are you retired from boxing? You are only 32 …if yes, why?
A: I am retired. I was forced to retire due to an eye injury. I tried to continue but eventually I had to call it quits. It was a very dramatic decision to make but I had to follow the advice of my doctors.
Q: Any chance for a comeback? You were after all 24-0 …
A: Unfortunately no, my eye problems make it impossible.
