Canelo already said he won't fight for the WBC title and I doubt he'll give up an weight advantage for the IBF's second day weigh in. I have the feeling even if he'll win all the belts he'll vacate all since he doesn't accept terms and conditions from no boxing sanctioning bodies. He's the money maker , so fook all those leeches!

GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
GGG's promoter, Tom Loeffler: "If 'Canelo' chooses not to fight for the IBF title then Gennady won't unfairly be burdened by that second day weigh-in. So not to get into details on that but 'Canelo' has the choice. He can fight for all the titles, he can fight for one title, he can fight for none of the titles and we'll go from there."

Once fighters reach this level of notoriety the titles really don't even matter anymore.

They matter for GGG, and it is unfortunate that he had to skip the BJS fight. He will not lose to Canelo, so all those hypothetical scenarios are worthless.
Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
Actually, it's pretty smart to avoid that second-day weigh in. It worked for Lemieux. He brought his big ass in and KO'd Stevens. I have to wonder if more fighters will do this to get all the advantages.

Canelo doesn't give a fly $hit on those trinkets. If it's something that it would help him in a fight he will do it. I'm sure if he wants to show up at 162 lbs on the weigh in assuming there is no money penalty in the contract he will show up at that weight.
Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
Don't be stupid... He won't show up at 162 for the official weigh-in. He'll be 160 for the weigh-in because he's no clown like Jose Luis Castillo.. He's a professional -- and the weight for Middleweight has always been 160 -- whether or not sanctioning bodies, orgs, or other greedy bastards even existed.
Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
Doesn't each fighter have to pay 3% of their total gross fight purse to each governing body in sanctioning fees.
So wouldn't that be 12% of their fight purses, which would be paid to the WBC, WBA, IBF & IBO?
If Canelo has no intention to abide by the IBF's horrendously strict rules nor help fund the WBC when he feels that they've acted unreasonably, then I can understand him refusing to pay those governing bodies roughly a million dollars each.
Canelo is "bigger" than the belts. He doesn't need them.

Misleading title to the thread. He is not keeping them "in case" he loses.
Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
The IBO website states that its fees are 3% of the champion's purse and 3% of the challenger's purse. Both boxers (champion and challenger) would have to pay if the IBO sanctions a world title fight. I assume those are the same rules for the other sanctioning bodies. It comes down to what would you rather have: more money or the opportunity to get or keep a world title. The organizations make most of their money on the fights with the big purses. Fights such as women's world title fights make much less money for them, but it gives them more media coverage and exposure. Can you believe that the sanctioning bodies are registered as non-profit organizations with the U.S. federal government?verlichte wrote:Doesn't each fighter have to pay 3% of their total gross fight purse to each governing body in sanctioning fees.

They are doing nothing but leeching fighters money. Canelo is gonna fight for pride and legacy. He's already the biggest cash-cow in boxing and he stated that no boxing org. dictates him what to do.RScarf1 wrote:The IBO website states that its fees are 3% of the champion's purse and 3% of the challenger's purse. So Canelo being the underdog and willing to face the best boxer of our generation, Floyd Mayweather Jr, had nothing whatsoever to do with pride or legacy?Ossyrules wrote:Canelo is fighting for money, and lots of it. And now he's the underdog again to face a fighter that is universally regarded as the very best middleweight of the last decade.
And you say that also has nothing whatsoever to do with pride and legacy?
Please explain what he has to do to earn your respect?
Canelo could have remained as a 154lb-er and continued earning massive paydays against lesser opponents without having ever to agree to fight GGG.

Lets say Boxer X has a purse of $15m.. nd he was paying sanctioning fees for 4 orgs..verlichte wrote:Doesn't each fighter have to pay 3% of their total gross fight purse to each governing body in sanctioning fees.

WBC: $450k
WBA: $450k
IBF: $450k
IBO: $450k
Total: $1.8m of his $15m purse
Left with $13.2m.. and thats before any other taxes or costs..

If you can't fight for pride and legacy, BIG MONEY won't come, so Canelo is fighting for those two things for sure.

It doesn't mean that Canelo has to do it. I apologise in advance if I've said something incorrect, but you'd need to explain what I've actually done that is so wrong.

That's true. The point I was making was that to some fighters, it's about belts. As well as money. When a boxer wins, it looks good to hold a title above your head thsn be empty handed.apollo creed wrote:It doesn't mean that Canelo has to do it. I think he still takes great pride in them. I saw a photo of all the belts he has won on a display table. They all looked shiny and new. Actually, they don't collect dust because they are usually stored in cases. It is the cases that collect dust and I know this from experience. I have two world title belts from minor sanctioning bodies in cases and I did not have to fight for them. I did have to pay for them though.apollo creed wrote:FMJ: “All belts do is collect dust.”

The whole golovkin saga with oscar "marinating" the fight is as much about timing to maximise success chances and future big money fights, and legacy. But if he was all about pride then why wait it out for this?

Khan bring money to the table as well.
I'm far from saying that he's a mercenary, but I can't think why he'd face Khan or Chavez if money was not a primary factor.
FTR I rate canelo and have full respect for his abilities, he deserves to be paid well as do most boxers

Why an well established fighter should give to some boxing org. fees from his blood and tears work ? Canelo vs GGG fight would do the same numbers without those trinkets.
What these boxing org. really do for fighters beside leeching their hard-earned money ?

Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
Canelo is all about belts when it is convenient for him. He showed no interest in fighting Andrade when he had the belt, but jumped at the chance to take the belt from a much easier opponent in Liam Smith after Andrade was stripped.
Re: GGG may 'keep' the WBC and IBF titles in case he loses against Canelo
Yeah most fighters do, but there is a certain level of Superstardom in Boxing where once you reach it you're pretty much a made man, and belts aren't really necessary anymore at that pointRuthless-RKO wrote:FMJ still fought for belts when he was clearly at a stage he didn't have too.gilgamesh wrote:Once fighters reach this level of notoriety the titles really don't even matter anymore.
I'm sure Canelo will still be fighting for belts in the future though, just because fighters like being called Champ and it adds to their list of accolades.
