Andy Townend vs Jon Kays

Post by handsofstone »

For the vacant Commonwealth Super Featherweight title on the Brook card this Saturday, this seems like a 50/50 fight both guys have fallen short at British/Commonwealth title level before, Kays fought Liam Walsh for this same belt 6 years ago and was stopped late on, also he was stopped late on in a British title fight against Sykes, he's a decent boxer is Kays I don't think ive seen him since he was destroyed by Adrian Gonzalez

Townend is a game little fighter and has a bit of a dig, he's had a couple of wins since being stopped in a British title fight against Ward, he'll try to bully Kays I imagine but I can see Kays outboxing him to win a decision

Townend is pretty fun to watch. I can't remember too much about Kays. Remember him fighting Sykes years ago and remember the young guy Gonzalez stopping him. Think I'll go with Townend to wear him down and get the stoppage.

If I remember rightly kays was up on cards against sykes but got stopped in a debatable stoppage.

Think this cud b a very good fight. Townend power v kays skills. I fancy kays on points. As long as kays doesn't stand and trade I think he out boxes townend. Ward and glover ( for 3 rounds anyway) set the blue print how to beat him.

Funnily enough Kays was actually boxing well against Gonzalez despite being down 4 times and stopped in the 4th.....if that's possible

Where did that Gonzalez disappear to? That was the last time I'd heard of him. That was a while ago now. Wasn't he Lee Beards stepson or something?

I fancy Townend to win. I just think that Kays won't have the durability to last. Stefy is very clever and knows who beats Andy. Like Martin j Ward just took him apart . Kay's doesn't really have handspeed etc and fights in front of you popping out a jab. I believe he'll get caught. Also zelfa Barrett saying he wants that title on an interview.

Townend's a puncher and Kays has been stopped a few times including by Gary Sykes.
Hard to see him keeping Townend off for 12, Shirley ?
Will be a good fight :box: :box:

Problem Townend has is his footwork he is always in range and a good boxer will just pick him off.. Speed is the way to bamboozle him and force a stoppage.. A few years ago would of fancied Kay's but just think he's a bit past it now

Should be an entertaining fight but hardly worthy of being for the Commonwealth title. I wouldn't give either of them a chance against Zelfa Barrett.

Gonzalez ended up in prison but released now.

I see this being a one sided win for Townend. KO first 6 rounds.

Kays might survive for a few rounds with his in and out popping punches, but Townend will get to him by half way methinks. Kays is chinny and I think Townend will go for him.

Jon's a great guy but I think Townend will win here.

Jon's been training for a long time for this fight and it means the world to him to win it.

My worry for him is that he got a really nasty cut last time out against Ibrar Riyaz, and has seen him out since then.

I think it'll be a bloody, distance win for Townend.

Me too. Even when the detractors said he'd fought nobody. They're right, but the skills are there, and everyone is seeing them now. Too many people look at records. :salut:

Wouldn't mind seeing him beat up Stephen Smith soon.

Definitely.

That said, anyone beating up any of the Smiths is a top day.

Very good win for Townend, I fancied Kays to outbox him, I knew Townend would be dangerous but I was still surprised he got rid of Kays that early, rocked him bad with that first left hook and Kays never recovered, good call from his corner to stop it

Townend looked good. Seems to of improved vastly last couple of years.
You'd give him a punchers chance against anyone at LW. Matchmaking wise- you'd try and avoid putting him in with a mover.
Townend against Masher would be fun.

Zelfa sparring Bateson hard is only doing both good. That will be harder than his bouts. And apparently, they go for it.
