HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
I first learned about the Kovalev on Jim Lampley's show on HBO the fight game, I followed Kovalev's career on HBO, HBO's commentary in the first fight was much more friendlier to Kovalev. In the second fight, Roy Jones who usually displays a neutral to pro Kovalev attitude was completely against Kovalev even before Kovalev gassed out with statements like Kovalev doesn't even have a left hook as if just discovered after watching the guy fight like 7 times. It was interesting to watch HBO turn against their media creation.

oh well, HBO, NSAC and Co. birds of a feather stick together...HBO probably realised they can't milk him any more..

Probably had more to do with patriotism, They can write him back into the script later if they want to.greg wrote:oh well, HBO, NSAC and Co. birds of a feather stick together...HBO probably realised they can't milk him any more..

Roy is right about the left hook and I would add missing uppercuts. Funny that even without them, he was able to outbox the "p4p #1" in their first fight.

To my memory Kovalev throws a slapping left hook up top, and half decent one to the body.boxing_rocks wrote:... unless he jumps the ship.victor-romeo wrote:Probably had more to do with patriotism, They can write him back into the script later if they want to.greg wrote:oh well, HBO, NSAC and Co. birds of a feather stick together...HBO probably realised they can't milk him any more..

You also have to remember that ward works for HBO (or at least has in the past).victor-romeo wrote:I first learned about the Kovalev on Jim Lampley's show on HBO the fight game, I followed Kovalev's career on HBO, HBO's commentary in the first fight was much more friendlier to Kovalev. For me, he's still bigger then any other cruiserweight or light heavyweight he ever fought

Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
Kovalev simply isn't the destroyer that he nor HBO set him out to be.

I was a Kovalev fan long before he was on HBO, and this premise makes no sense.

Same. I liked him the first time I saw him. This thread and whatever point the OP is trying to make is ridiculous.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I was a Kovalev fan long before he was on HBO, and this premise makes no sense.

How did HBO destroy Kovalev?
Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
They gave him exposure which led to him getting big fights he ultimately didn't win. They f*cked him over big time with those big money opportunities he was able to get because of HBO taking an interest in him. Damn shame, if they'd just left him fighting on Fox Sports 1 or ESPN he'd really have DONE something in this sport.Impractical Poster wrote:How did HBO destroy Kovalev?

Dang!! I can think of a ton of boxers who would love for HBO to "destroy" them as well.gilgamesh wrote:They gave him exposure which led to him getting big fights he ultimately didn't win. Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
HBO didn't build him. They were slow to warm up to him and quick to forget him. In nearly all the fights, Roy and Max were waiting for a failure, even in the complete shutout of Hopkins, somehow Bernard had Kovalev exactly where he wanted him in the 12th. And it was pretty convenient how quickly the bad decision of Ward 1 was forgotten.
Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
According to who? Roy? Roy sucks as a commentator, too biased. He also constantly wants to talk about himself, and his career at every possible chance as opposed to what's going on in the ring.Blodhemn wrote:HBO didn't build him. Isn't that the point? Max did it also more notably in the first Pascal fight not to mention the Ward nuthuggery.gilgamesh wrote:According to who? Roy? Roy sucks as a commentator, too biased. Max Kellerman had Kovalev winning the 1st fight so I don't see bias on his end. Roy is bias in almost every fight.Blodhemn wrote:Isn't that the point? Interesting theory but clearly falls into the realm of conspiracy theories, which are very hard to prove or disprove.victor-romeo wrote:I first learned about the Kovalev on Jim Lampley's show on HBO the fight game, I followed Kovalev's career on HBO, HBO's commentary in the first fight was much more friendlier to Kovalev. Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
Kovalev built and destroyed Kovalev. Plain and simple.

Re: HBO built and destroyed Kovalev
Kovalev isn't destroyed... That's like saying Robinson was destroyed when he lost to Turpin, Fullmer, Basilio, Ralph Jones, Maxim, or whoever beat him.
What happens is you keep working on your game, make yourself better, and come back another day... He who has the last laugh -- laughs best.
Kovalev has never been out-boxed or out-punched to my satisfaction... He's been ripped off by corrupt officials -- and I believe that's the general consensus.
