The World Boxing Council has announced the creation of the "Adolfo Lopez Mateos" commemorative belt, which they plan to present as a special prize to the winner of the middleweight showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
According to the WBC, the belt is being designed and created by the Huichol community.

You cant make this stuff up
Re: Canelo-Golovkin: WBC Creating Special Huichol Belt For The Fight
Canelo already rejected the other Huichol belt made especially for his fight with Chavez Jr., so the WBC donated it to a museum.

Re: Canelo-Golovkin: WBC Creating Special Huichol Belt For The Fight
As of last week, 28th June, Canelo made it clear that he didn't have any intention of fighting Golovkin for the WBC belt.
Maurico Sulaiman has already stated that he will sanction the fight and the winner will still be the WBC champion.
I'm guessing that if Canelo wins, but refuses to pay the WBC's sanctioning fees for either their standard or commemorative belts, then Sulaiman's official world 160lb title will become vacant.
The WBC's manoeuvres appear to be a desperate ploy to generate income from sanctioning fees as well as add publicity in order to increase the prestige of their own governing body. It seems that they desperately want to be part of any big fight, even if it isn’t a world title contest.

If Canelo will win I'd like to see what Mauricio will have to say when Canelo vacates it.
Sooner or later these org. will start to fade. Look at what great tournament is World Boxing Super Series with the Muhammad Ali trophy. That's a real serious tournament.
Re: Canelo-Golovkin: WBC Creating Special Huichol Belt For The Fight
If all the top boxers agree to tournaments like this, then the sanctioning bodies could become irrelevant. The problem is that there are champions who are content with not testing themselves and the sanctioning bodies sometimes allow it. There needs to be more tournaments in other divisions, but it takes an investment of time and money by someone else if the sanctioning bodies are not involved.apollo creed wrote:If Canelo will win I'd like to see what Mauricio will have to say when Canelo vacates it.Sooner or later these org. will start to fade. I agree! Look how badly-exposed Lucian Bute was when he eventually faced the runner-up of the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament (Carl Froch).RScarf1 wrote:If all the top boxers agree to tournaments like this, then the sanctioning bodies could become irrelevant. Tournaments are great. They worth the money.

Good for Canelo. The Huichols are an obscure tribe from deep Mexico. Sulaiman is following Daddy's lead in trying to politicize the WBC.RScarf1 wrote:Canelo already rejected the other Huichol belt made especially for his fight with Chavez Jr., so the WBC donated it to a museum.
