Arum: Pacquiao Can Make A lot of Money From Horn Rematch

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

A few days ago, when Manny Pacquiao arrived back home to the Philippines, the eight division world champion informed numerous Filipino scribes that last weekend's fight against Jeff Horn was "his last fight" under his promotional agreement with Top Rank.

Not so, says Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum.

According to Top Rank, Pacquiao's promotional agreement does not expire until the middle of 2018.

There is no guarantee that Pacquiao, 38-years-old, will fight again. His political career has really taken off since winning a senatorial seat in Philippines over a year ago.

Arum plans to sit down with Pacquiao in the coming weeks to discuss his future.

“He can make a lot of money (fighting Horn in a rematch),” Arum told the Manila Bulletin. “It’s all up to him and in two weeks I will be coming over (to the Philippines) and discuss with him and his wife Jinkee."

ccording to Arum, Brisbane has the contractual right to match any offer for the rematch, so there is a high probability of the second fight taking place in Australia. That may not sit well with Pacquiao, who was very vocal about holding the rematch either in the Philippines or on neutral ground like Las Vegas.

I can't believe Arum, trying to milk it all the way.. What he really means is.. Arum can make a lot of money for the rematch.

I read an article which stated that Arum told Pacquiao that if he did not win against Horn that he would no longer be his promoter. Now Arum sees all this worldwide attention and outrage and changes his mind.

The Pac-Brad fights got boring each time, because even after the first fight, everyone knew Pac was better.. Even the ppv buyrates will tell you, they decreased each fight.

Now there is more of a challenge here, because some think Horn did enough to win as well.. But, having a trilogy, the only way it would be a success.. is having the other 2 fights in Australia and Philippines.. Not that I want to see a trilogy.

Pacquiao does not have it anymore. That's what Arum should be telling him. Horn really isn't the great of a fighter. Still good enough to knock Pacquiao out in a rematch.

I think Pacquiao is still better than most here give him credit for. I say do the rematch and show the world he is better by dominating Horn. This time don't take him lightly like I think he and Roach did the first time.

Horn has a better style than Bradley, though. It's more suitable to the mainstream. I've not heard a single person say that fight was boring. Hell, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also know a few posters, that I highly respect, that think Horn won that fight. I'd love to see a rematch.

I'd actually buy it on PPV if they get a good undercard.

Also, you are dead wrong right here. In the second fight, I remember a lot were thinking Bradley was going to take it because of Pacquioa's age and coming off the KO loss.

He wasn't coming off the KO loss. He lost to Marquez immediately after Bradley, He then beat Rios after a year off. Maybe the second fight was better than the first, because Bradley had more to prove, less people bought it.. and okay, I may be wrong on the second fight being boring, I haven't re-watched it.. But the third fight was not needed.

Pacquiao wasn't coming straight off the KO loss, but he was coming straight off a boring win over Rios. The shadow of the KO loss was very much still there going into the second fight. People actually thought Bradley would've won that since he was coming off the win over Marquez.

Yup.. Even the Bradley-Marquez fight was a questionable result.

Actually, I was arguing tooth-n-nail since I thought Marquez won, but the large majority think Bradley won that. I stopped arguing and say Bradley won that fight.

I don't think there's any clear evidence Manny took Horn lightly. He was in shape, didn't gas out from not training. He's simply an old fighter, very shopworn, and he's been well past his best for years now.

If it is in Australia again, I think Pacquiao loses the rematch. The officials are not going to change. They may even be worse in order to ensure Horn wins.

Are you suggesting that the same three judges (two Americans and an Argentine ) will judge the match again and have some sort of pro-Australian leaning?

No, I meant the bias is not going to change. They probably will use three different judges and a referee, but whoever they pick will be influenced by the crowd cheering for Horn and being silent when Pacquiao lands a punch. I think Arum is not interested in a trilogy. If Horn wins a rematch, there are bigger and more lucrative fights down the road.

The three judges for Horn/Pac have judged 1,535 fights between the three of them. I'm sure they no longer judge a round based on how many drunk people scream.

Judges can be influenced in many ways, all of them. Experience, origin, doesn't matter. Some of the most experienced judges ever have turned in some of the worst scorecards possible. For example, the wildly inaccurate scores of Pacquiao vs Horn. Wrong is wrong, as those were. Time to stop excusing it.

Everyone except Arum can see that Manny's a boxing legend. Nothing left to prove, with a career in politics in front of him. Arum should know better, he's old enough and has seen enough tragedy already. This is starting to look like Ali all over again.

Risking further damage to his mental faculties is inviting tragedy to happen. Pacquiao has been in too many wars already and is risking falling victim to his own warrior's spirit.

I remember this ex-boxer telling me how he came to lose his teeth. He was taking a battering and lost his gumbshield. Neither the referee nor his corner intervened whilst he like an idiot, his phrase, kept getting back up.

All boxers are brave, many are too brave.

I don't think so. Manny Pacquiao is loved by his people and can do a lot for them via politics. Why risk a potentially great political future by chasing 'easy' money at this age and with so many many hard rounds behind him?

Boxing needs many reforms before it can hold its head up high. I find it heartbreaking to see too many of my heroes unnecessarily reduced by this cruel sport in the same way. I don't want to see Manny Pacquiao join their numbers. Winning is about getting out with your money and your health intact.

Guys like Ray Leonard and Larry Holmes got out not a moment too soon. They fully deserve to enjoy all the wealth and accolades that they earned the hard way.

I'm pretty sure that someone like Eddie Hearn would be telling Manny that he doesn't need this. There are other important battles to be fought.

Bob Arum should know better, he really should.

I know this, but I'm tired of people crapping on countries when the judges aren't even from there.

The official WBA review had Horn winning again, BTW. No cheering crowds involved...

I've long ago quit blaming Pac. He is just not smart enough to see how Arum has taken advantage of him. He can also blame himself for giving away half of his earnings. Pac will be broke In 5 years. Rags to riches to rags.
