I'm pretty sure Robinson usually wore white trunks as did Liston, Demsey is wearing white ones when he fights Willard. But like you I've only seen black and white footage but it's pretty hard to mistake white for any other colour.

Your right a lot wear black or white, those were off the top of my head. However a lot of the time I see different shades of gray, which could be blue or green or something.

...joe louis usually wore purple trunks...announcers often referred to his "royal purple trunks"

i don't know about any of the others mentioned. when tv came along it was common to have one fighter in white trunks with a black stripe and the other with black trunks, white stripes.....for easier b/w television identification.

....in recent years, with color tv i knew boxing would never be the same when i heard a fighter being announced as wearing "light blue trunks with multi-colored accessories." i shudder to think what jake lamotta would do to an opponent like that.

Joe "Sandy" Saddler often wore Scottish plaid trunks. In early TV fights black boxers normally were assigned white trunks with black stripe and white boxers the opposite.

That La Motta comment made me laugh to no end, good one .If Jake were around today he'd feel right at home at 168 and he would IMO be undisputed champ at that weight,he did always have trouble making the middle limit.Jaclem, you know alot about old time boxers and i have read many interesting storys about fighters from you,are there any La Motta stories you can share.
