His back wasn't thick, but particularly wide which added to his reach.

Re: Broad back, long arms
look at the pictures from the Cuevas fight, for 6'2/147 his lats/back/shoulders were broad (less so in the leonard fight when he came in underweight), and got broader still as he moved up in weightChippo wrote:Did he have a broad back? I don't think GGG belongs in this conversation - he doesn't have a particularly broad back or long arms. If he did his reach would be more than 70 inches.
Hearns is a great example, both broad back and long arms, giving him his immense 78 inch wingspan.
I've got long arms myself, though my back is probably about average. I'm 6'1" with 77 inch wingspan and weigh about 170lb, but could definitely get down to 160 for a fight and could have made welterweight in my early 20s.

David Haye
Although he fits between cruiser and what the standard heavyweight size is now. He had long arms, broad shoulders, thinner waist

Re: Broad back, long arms
Lennox Lewis was another but look at Julian Jackson and Golovkin both pretty narrow shoulders
Re: Broad back, long arms
Not sure if his reach, but McClennan seemed to have good should spread for a taller rangier guy at 160/168

Hagler and Barkley had the broad backs when they fought Hearns... They made Tommy look like a waif on roller skates.Chippo wrote:Did he have a broad back? I see him a skinny dude at 47. He certainly bulked up later in his career.Counter-puncher wrote:Hearns is the poster boy in this one
Re: Broad back, long arms
I know its a recent one but Joe Smith Jr, massively long arms ad broad back.
RJJ too
Think those people have good straight punches. Edit: Good outside punches.
But look at David Lemieux, he's like a T-Rex and has great power for 3/4 rounds.

Re: Broad back, long arms
Tyson, Marciano, and Tua had short arms... Rocky's back wasn't big or broad.. Joe Louis didn't have a big or broad back when he was weighing 196 for Carnera and 197 for Baer.. But he still looked formidable.. He looked really compact and definite looked like the man in there with those 2 bigger, broader men.. A young Louis looked spring loaded in there.. Baer had the super long arms and broad back, but looked silly as Hell.. He couldn't box.
A lot of it is technique.. A coach like Jack Blackburn can give you a super balanced stance where your feet, knees, waist, shoulders, hands, and punching form are correct.. He can show you how to get strong with various exercises and things you can do to improve your balance.. Your footwork has to be good. He'll painstakingly make all those little corrections to your feet, hands waist, and how you're holding your head.. Most coaches don't do that. Most guys, in effect, teach themselves how to fight and they never really get there. And maybe your punching power is great, but you won't get your punch to the target against a real good boxer, or all styles, if you can't box or defend yourself well.. So it doesn't matter how hard you punch if your technique and training is fkd up.
