Hype around Dillian Whyte?

Post by IronFrost »

For some weird reason , there is a lot hype about this guy.

How is this even possible? Someone who lost against past prime faded Dereck Chisora does not deserve hype with such calibre ....

And yes he lost against Chisora that for sure. He got outoxed and was hurt several times. I can not even imagine him against prime Chisora.

Whyte is on similiar level like Lucas Browne - similar speed (both slow compare to top HWs) but Browne hits harder.

So why is there so much hype about this GUY?

Is that because he is from UK? Give Browne similiar hype :) They are both on same level

I think it's just the hype around Joshua, and he's getting some of the shine.

It was very, very close against Chisora, I have not rewatched the fight, but definitely it was a hell of fight.
DW's style is rather attractive, he has got "cojones" and, yes he is UK citizen.
I think he deserved to be mentioned, speaking about hype is a little bit exaggeration.

He's a character, puncher and a heavyweight. Plus the Josh backstory and he's active. Loads of copy there.

He's not that much of a puncher. Hasnt dropped an opponent in his last three and was second best when it came to doing damage in the Chisora fight.

I don't think he is hyped really.
From who he has fought, it is a measuring stick for who is next to fight him.
I think he is a top draw domestic fighter, and a suitable challenge for someone wanting a decent B grade opponent on their way to the A level.
If someone beats him convincingly it says your ready for the big time.
Top 15 for sure, can he do better? A punchers chance I suppose.
I like him. But I'm not expecting a belt around his waist, he is entertaining.

He took a terrific beating and savage KO loss to Joshua... I don't think you're ever the same after a beating like that...

Wladimir took a hard beating from Joshua but he didn't get nailed flush with so many big shots like Whyte... He didn't get his brains knocked in and it was stopped appropriately so he wasn't badly hurt.. Beyond that icing, I don't think Whyte has extraordinary talent.. He's a hard worker and he can fight.

He may possibly become a World Champion and he'll be a top 10 contender for a long time. He's kind of like Zora Folley, Eddie Machen, Hasim Rahman, Lou Nova, Ernie Terrell, Ray Mercer, Eddie Chambers, Charles Martin, and other guys who lack top skills and talent.. He's better than the Duane Bobick's, Alvin Blue Lewis's, and Alexander Dimitrenko's of the world.

No one has attempted to hype-up Dillian Whyte. He does not carry a fearsome reputation and nor is he considered a big name in the UK.

I have absolutely no idea how you’ve concluded that Dillian Whyte’s reputation has received a lot of hype from the media.

Therefore, the topic of this thread is utterly bizarre in nature, since people being are being asked to comment on an issue that does not exist in any version of reality!

What hype?

He gets talked about, yes, & so he should, but over hyped?

I don't think so.

There is no hype out there indeed, I can't name 3 Americans who would have the odds against him. Not even 1 in fact.

Any hype he might have had for beating Joshua in the amateurs should have been taken care of when they fought in the pros. A good fight for him now to see where he is at would be Babyfat Miller or Pillsbury Doughboy Pedvetkin.

No doubt that he's not ripped, but Povetkin hasn't really been a fatty in a while. Certainly not in the Stiverne, Arreola, or Miller categories. ..guys like Ortiz and Whyte are flabbier too, and even Parker has looked worse lately. These days guys like Wlad, AJ, and Wilder are exceptions...

I think he was being a bit overhyped prior to Chisora. Overrated at least....

He'd beaten no one in the top 70, yet many knowledgeable posters expected an easy win and there was plenty of talk about him being a serious banger. Seems to be rated more appropriately now...he's about as good as Chisora.

I doubt there's many boxing fans that know more of whyte than the British boxing fans, and trust me, domestically he is not hyped. I don't think I've ever heard a brit say that Whyte is our next heavyweight champ etc. Guys who carry hype (and some have justified it) over here are Joshua, Frank Bruno, these kind of guys. Fan friendly.

Whyte is pretty much seen as a good domestic boxer, could make European level (though these days guys seem to bypass that belt) possible fringe world level. And if guys like Charles Martin, audley Harrison, molina, breazeale are getting shots, then whyte can believe he's not far off either.

Some were right saying that some of the Joshua noise, whyte was collateral of, which is true, but a very average points decision over the woeful David Allen, average performance vs lewison, fighting a cracking fight vs Del Boy (whose at the end of a tough career), has made people more realistic.

But Whyte, like chisora was, are characters and boxing needs characters, so I do follow them with interest, especially if they fight like they did vs each other

Repeatedly saying that he lost to Chisora doesn't change the fact that he won that fight by SD  I think in the UK at least they are both very much considered to be at the same 'slightly better then the other gatekeepers' - level.... and that seems pretty fair to me.

Lucas Browne (your guy?) is old & coming off a drugs ban which makes me think hes going to be over 40 and getting fed to young prospects sooner rather than later.

Whyte is terribly over hyped in the sense that we constantly here about him fighting this or that champion. And the reason for this is two words, Eddie Hearn. He wants to make Whyte Wilder in the UK and feed the winner to AJ in a "big unification fight". Thats all.

That to me isn't hype. Whyte is around the level of guys Wilders been facing, and whyte talks a lot to try and increase his value in the game

Yeah, for want of a better word. It does annoy the hell out of me too thought. When what he should be doing is rematching Chisora who beat the living daylight out of him and deserved the decision.

Yes Del Boy was the guvnor in that fight, whyte didn't really make a dent on him but it was a very close fight that could have gone to either. I can't believe a great fight like that isn't getting done again either

X2 :TU:
If Del Boy can get back in shape ( maybe better shape) I'd love to see that again

Whyte is around the talent level of Wilders post title defences maybe slightly above. That would be fairly decent. Well, more decent than Stiverne 2 :brick:

He beat Dereck Chisora and gave Anthony Joshua a pretty hard time.
