Stevenson was on the slide by then and Payne was a talented fighter who also beat a young Mike Tyson.zojo, wrote:Stevenson - Beats a laundry list as well, but loses to Craig PAYNE!!!!!
I saw Payne as a Pro once on TV, he was completely out of shape but you could at times still see flashes of real talent, what a waste!

Payne
The giant Craig Payne beats Mike Tyson by points, in March 1983, at National Golden Globes in Alburquerque New Mexico.
Payne also beats Teofilo Stevenson in September 1983, in a controversial decision (3-2), in Houston Texas, at the clasificatory tournament for the World Cup of Boxing.
In Rome, at 1983 AIBA World Cup, finally Payne loses by points against Francesco Damiani at the final.
In June 1984, in Fort Worth Texas, at USA Olympic Trials, Payne loses against Tyrrell Biggs.
300 pounds Payne turns pro in March 1985. And, with a record 7-1-1, in November 1992, loses a 12 rounds decision against Pinklon Thomas, in the inaugural fight for the vacant IBO Heavyweight Title.
He retires in 1991 with record 12-20-1 (8 KO).

Other Cuban records...
Hi,
Those records are excellent. Do you have any plans for more? i.e Horta, Vinent, Kindelan etc.

Roberto Balado's amateur record
Hello.
I invite you to see a new record at my page (http://www.geocities.com/pedrinet/): the Roberto Balado's amateur record.
Coming soon: Mario Kindelan, Hector Vinent and others.
Also, I add some actulizations to Odlanier Solis' record, and some corrections to Stevenson and Savon records (all is under construction).
Enjoy this,
Pedro

the 2 famous cuban heavies would probably have fared as well in the pros as joel casamayor---1992 gold medalist. good, but not the best by any stretch...especially considering the difficulty most cubans have had ADJUSTING TO THE DIFFERENCES IN THE STYLE OF THE PRO GAMEzojo, wrote:Interesting stuff:

Joel Casamayor never won a major title after the Barcelona Olympics where he entered as a substitute for Enrque Carrion who got injured. Besides he competed as a bantam/feather. What the hell is he doing at lightweight where he must run a lot because he isn’t strong enough?
Juan Carlos Gomez or Diobelys Hurtado didn’t have many problems to adjust to the differences in the style of the pro game. And they weren’t even the best Cubans at their weight. Do you think Kindelan or Rigondeaux would have many problems to adjust to the pro game?
