Think about it...this is GGG's last big opponent so of course he wants to multiply his fortunes from it if he can. There's no one else he can sign on to fight that will bring in this kind of money. PLUS, it won't be long before people start calling GGG out to fight Charlo and that fight is ALL WRONG for an aging fighter. My guess is that GGG wants to end his career with a couple big fights against Canelo and retire before the Charlo noise gets heavy.

Also sounded like he knows he's gonna get robbed and will get the second fight. Boxing is so corrupt and untrustworthy right now in USA it's hard to trust or analyze anything without considering the corruption factor. And for the business of boxing - Vegas, gambling syndicates, TV network, Mexican demographic - all roads lead to a Canelo win or robbery win. GGG has to step up and beat the system. Hopefully the system hasn't made him a big fat offer that he could not refuse. Meaning the second fight will be the real one.

I agree with what is the likely consensus that Kovalev, I mean Golovkin, is too old and too faded to be competitive in a rubber match, so there's no point.

While there is some fan overlap between GGG and Kov, there is also overlap in the people eagerly hoping for them to lose for various reasons, whether demographic or 'we cant stand that people on forums hype them!!'. You can also see a lot more pro-Alvarez (and Ward) sentiment at other sites, and the most over the top hype tends to come from casuals, of which Canelo has more supporting him.

OP not making much sense here, as a rematch is more likely if the guy with the rematch clause (Alvarez) loses....

The boxing industry and all the trickle down profits far more if Canelo wins. Canelo is the Franchise. GGG is the patsy. The franchise owner has enough $$$ to buy off the patsy. Easy to rig such an outcome by giving the over the hill guy the big bag of $ to play soft. Hope this speculation is all wrong and we get a real honest fight with zero corruption.

The contract for the GGG-Canelo fight included a stipulation whereby the Mexican would be entitled to an immediate rematch should he lose to the Kazakh.

There is no such clause that compels Canelo to face GGG again, should he somehow defy the betting odds and score an upset victory over Golovkin.

Therefore, only a simpleton would fail to interpret the meaning behind Gennady’s words, since he is claiming that he’ll almost certainly beat Alvarez, which would then contractually compel GGG to agree to engage in a rematch.
