I've got a great shot of David Bey planting a left hook on Larry Holmes as my desktop wallpaper. RIP

Sad news.
He put up a good fight against Holmes.
Tragic.

RIP bey. But being realistic he lost to every half decent fighter he faced, except outpointing Greg Page.
He even drew with David Jaco. His record is awful. One of the worst world title challengers ever.

Re: David Bey - RIP
Bey was a very good fighter. The Ring magazine picked him to outpoint Holmes. Like many fighters, he never seemed to recover mentally after losing his undefeated record.
Beat Buster Douglas in his pro debut, beat Greg Page the fight before Page KOd Coetzee, gave Holmes a good rumble. If anyone who's unfamiliar with Bey wants to see an entertaining fight of his, he boxed the undefeated Tyrell Biggs on the Tyson/Bonecrusher undercard and was knocking the Olympian all over the ring until Biggs dramatically turned it around. A mini classic.
Very sad to hear about this. He was interviewed last year and for a man who took a lot of punches later on I was surprised by how well he spoke. Really depressing news.

Re: David Bey - RIP
Beating the future undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World on your proffesional debut aint so bad!!. I would be surprised if thats happened before or since.

Jaco's son runs a gym in his name here in Sarasota.boxingknockout wrote:RIP bey. But being realistic he lost to every half decent fighter he faced, except outpointing Greg Page.

Bey also knocked Jaco out in a rematch. He was totally punched out by the time he was fighting Jaco. Still, a draw and a KO vs Jaco is better than what Razor Ruddock did against him!

Just noticed that Bn are showing his fight vs joe hipp at 2am
Re: David Bey - RIP
Bey could definitely fight. He wobbled Holmes with a nice left hook but Holmes was too seasoned for him in the end. Bey was a bit unlucky in that his next few fights came against good men and they drove the ambition out of him, although he gave Joe Bugner a bit of a pasting in Oz but they gave it to Bugner.

Don't think I've ever seen his fight with Bugner. I seem to remember it was a bit of a hard to get one in the glorious days of VHS trading. I do have his fight with Bonecrusher Smith (main event of the more famous Ruddock/Weaver fight) and it was all even till Smith drops him in the 8th and pulls out a decision.bennie wrote:Bey could definitely fight. Too bad King wasn't interested in building him back up after his gallant Holmes loss. Trevor Berbick was a terrible comeback opponent for a man who had just lost his undefeated record.

I remember seeing the Bugner fight at the time and don't recall it being a bad decision, I think Bugner even had him on the floor but it was 30 years ago so I could be wrong.Tuan_Jim wrote:Don't think I've ever seen his fight with Bugner. Bey refused to go to South Africa to fight Coetzee due to the apartheid situation so Greg Page stepped in, I wonder if Bey might have had a chance against the South African, certainly a better chance than he had against even an ageing Holmes.

Doesn't sound as if there was a KD reading this contemporaneous press report from Oz. And the Bey camp was complaining about the decision.Flump wrote:I remember seeing the Bugner fight at the time and don't recall it being a bad decision, I think Bugner even had him on the floor but it was 30 years ago so I could be wrong.Tuan_Jim wrote:Don't think I've ever seen his fight with Bugner. Re: David Bey - RIP
There is mention of the KD in this one Jim, and Bey was certainly not happy with the decision. Will give the fight a watch again if it surfaces. I remember Page was upset with the verdict there as well, and Bonecrusher Smith turned down a fight with Bugner in Australia in the 80's over fears on the judging side. This will have been around the time he got screwed by the judges in Brazil against Adilson Rodrigues.Tuan_Jim wrote:Doesn't sound as if there was a KD reading this contemporaneous press report from Oz. David Bey RIP. And please note I'm not disrespecting but it's notable how as soon as any fighter passes, he suddenly becomes a superior fighter and should've been world champion.... bey was ok, but no standout.

Until it gets into posters' heads.... the bigging up, the exaggeration, the excessive flattery, the revisionist historianism is just nauseating.Tuan_Jim wrote:How many more times do you intend to repeat this same point?boxingknockout wrote:David Bey RIP. Whenever a boxer dies or is under difficult conditions he suddenly becomes the GOAT
Oh and by the way - it looks like others agree with me
Ps I'm sure Bey would've Ko'd Joshua in sparring..... twice

It nauseates you?
A sense of perspective is required, here.
