Okay, so its not happening in a Jungle - but I have been thinking alot about Hopkins vs DLH come up and I think there are some comparisons between this fight and Ali vs Foreman.
1) Alot of well respected Journo's and trainers are fearing that Oscar is going to get beaten up. Just like they did Ali.
2) In Hopkins, Oscar is facing an "indestructable" force, who beat up (when an underdog) a fighter who beat DLH on points. Remeniscent of Foreman and Frazier.
3) People are saying the DLH is a shot fighter, who had been unimpressive in his last outing (I thought both Ali and Frazier were dissapointing in the 2nd match) and also lost a few fights previously in controversial circumstances (Ali vs Norton 1).
4) Ali prior to the Foreman fight was calling it his legacy defining fight and said that he would retire after it. Just as DLH is saying now.
5) Despite being a big underdog, people were buying the fight primarily to see their hero (Ali) in action. Well DLH is the box office attraction in this fight.
6) Whilst it was being dubbed a mismatch, Ali vs Foreman was still the most widely anticipated matches in years - just like this one.
7) The 1974 fight pitted in the WBA/WBC Heavyweight champion with the NABF champion - for the first time in History if I recall. The 2004 bout pits the WBA/WBC and IBF champion with the WBO.
8) Its almost exactly 30 years since the rumble.
As you can see there are alot of similarities between the two, for Ali the rumble in the jungle will always be what cemeted his legacy and my god what a legacy it was. If Oscar pulls off the sensation, where does his legacy lie - I think the only thing he is lacking is a win in a superfight (against a fighter near his prime). Whilst Quartey was a modern day superfight, Quartey isn't even a modern dau legend - neither Vargas. The all timers he has faced are Whittikar, Camacho, Chavez, Trinidad and Moseley - he has scored 4 wins against these foes, but that was against the 3 ones that were shot.
Whilst Hopkins is 40, he is still a legend who most should consider near his prime at least. If DLH wins, were does he go in the all time bracket.
