Gassiev vs Dorticos. Should Lebedev be stripped ?

Post by izabelisk »

On december 2016 Gassiev fought the WBA super and IBF world champion, Denis Lebedev.

Gassiev was the #2 ranked of the IBF (#1 of IBF was vacant) and Dorticos was the WBA iterim champion and #1 ranked of the WBA. (Shumenov was the WBA regular champion).
The excuse of Lebedev to not allow Gassiev to fight for the WBA super world title was because Gassiev was not the WBA mandatory challenger. Lebedev want to fight for the WBA belt the winner of the fight between Dorticos and Shumenov.
Another reason mentioned by the Lebedev team is that Gassiev will claim a rematch clause if the WBA super world title was on line.

After his win, Gassiev became the IBF world champion and Lebedev was still WBA super world champion.

Dorticos said a lot of time that Shumenov and Lebedev was afraid and don't want to fight him.
On April 2017 Shumenov suffered of an eye injury and on June the WBA stripped Shumenov of his regular title and Dorticos became the WBA world regular champion. Lebedev was allow to make a voluntary defense against Mark Flanagan (#6 WBA) in July and the winner must fight Dorticos with in 120 days. (source: http://www.BS.com/wba-dorticos ... ut--117732)

However on 21 June 2017, Dorticos joined the World boxing super series and Lebedev declines the invitation. (source: http://www.BS.com/yunier-dorti ... es--117783)

On July Lebedev won against Flanagan.

Now we have Gassiev, the IBF world champion that will fight against Dorticos the WBA regular world champion.
Normally when a WBA champion unify the division, he becomes the WBA super champion.

For me, the winner of Dorticos-Gassiev must become the IBF and WBA super champion, and Lebedev should be stripped, because he lost against Gassiev last year and he didn't take part of the WBSS tournament to fight Dorticos.
Normally Gassiev should have won the WBA super belt when he beat Lebedev, so stripping Lebedev is for me normal.
Moreover the winner of the tournament can be the official undisputed cruiser-weight world champion.

What do you think about that ?

If anything, Dorticos will probably have to vacate his WBA Regular title to fight Gassiev, unless there was some agreement made before the tournament with the WBA, which I doubt since Lebedev will want to keep his belt, and there is no way the russians would let him near Usyk as a mandatory.

WBA should have never allowed Lebedev to keep his belt after Gassiev loss, but WBA is WBA.

This is what usually happens.

Recently, Sosa vacated Regular title to challenge Lomachenko and just now Peterson has vacated the Regular title to challenge Spence..

As you said there might be an agreement in place..
