Kell Brook explains reasons for delaying retirement

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Kell Brook has opened up on his outside of the ring troubles since losing the IBF welterweight title to American challenger Errol Spence.

'The Special One' has scarcely been seen since losing for the second time in his career as sporadic visits to the gym have been coupled with several reports of going off the rails.

Brook has decided to make changes to the way he's been living his life recently, and as he told Bob Westerdale of The Sheffield Star, the 31 year-old doesn't want to go out like that.

“It is very important to me that I just don’t walk away from this many fans, some of them die-hard, who have followed me all over," said Brook

“I want to give something back to them because they give me the buzz, they really cheer me on.

“They still haven’t seen the very, very best of me and I want to show that.”

Addressing his tendency to enjoy a socially-charged lifestyle during his downtime, Brook added: “I like a beer but there is only so much you can drink and only so much food you can have.”

"(I need) something else to get up for and get my mind occupied- the challenge of training, sparring and dieting, working at my best. Not having to think: ‘What can I do now?’”

Back-to-back losses against Gennady Golovkin and Spence, both of which saw Brook suffer bad facial damage requiring surgery, have taken their toll, although the Yorkshireman aims to put that right in his next outing.

“It (the Spence loss) burned me really bad, but time is a healer and it makes you stronger to get back in.

"“When you are no longer champion you find out a few things about yourself. You want to rebuild and get better.

“I don’t feel the pressure on me now I have been beaten. I want to enjoy myself and give the fans 100 percent.”

Whether that means just one more bout or a full-time active program for Book remains to be seen, whilst hopes of finally sealing a clash with Amir Khan were recently dashed by his career nemesis.

Surely, it's not how much his fans like him, or how much he likes to eat and drink that need explaining.

He needs to weigh up whether he can return to the ring without seriosuly damaging his eye.

The eye GGG broke seemed to hold up well against Spence.. He's had the same surgery twice now.. Both eyes should be fine.. Only his next fight with a good puncher will tell..

Brook wouldn't resort to being defensive.. He likes to attack and throw rather than move

Good luck to the lad. I can't see him doing much at light middle but if he gets a couple of decent wins he can go out in a big fight against one of the champs at 154

Is Kell Brook going to be a 'What could have been' fighter??

Had he had better defences at 147? Not moved up for GGG and instead fought Jesse Vargas in a unification?

I respect his decision to retire in the Spence fight. It was obvious he couldn't see the shots coming, why be a sitting duck? 20 years ago I'd probably have been calling him a pussy, I knew fornicate all then.

Maybe, but a wealthier one than if he did go that route.

I agreed with his decision to quit aswell and i gave him credit for the heart he showed in that fight but it doesnt change the fact that hes quit in back to back fights on PPV now.

I would think the main reason for delaying retirement is that he in all likelihood still has a lot to give. Providing his orbital bones hold up, he's a skilled operator still.

Brook vs Khan would still be big money, and I could see him becoming a noteworthy contender at 154.

He could definitely become European Champion at 154 if nothing else I'd think. Even if he's not capable of a World Title win at 154 I'd still figure he's good enough for the European Title, which is nothing to scoff at.

Brook vs Khan seems like the best case scenario as far as risk/reward goes though. Of course appeasing Khan, and getting him to sign for a fight is often a hassle.

He didn’t quit against golovkin, his corner towelled. I’d say it was a good call based on the injury and that he was able to be repaired still. Anyway while that fight lasted if was a great fight. I was right on the edge of my seat for that one. Surely we’d rather see 5 rounds of that than 12 of Wlad vs fury or 12 of Mayweather vs mcgregor

Vs Spence I still think to palm it off as a quit is harsh on the lad. He fought for 5 rounds with that injury. It’s clear he was struggling worse. Spence was putting it on him strong.

Brook still has some to offer. He has a lot of ability, it’d be good to see how he goes at 154 and if he can challenge at the top again.

He needs to curb the beers outbthe ring though, get dedicated again and ultimately it matters not about the fans etc, his heart has to be 100% in it

“socially charged lifestyle” an excellent euphemism for “sordid gay sex encounter ending in machete attack”

Glad to see an interview were he alludes to his socialising problems. Can't help but think whether his body would've held up better in fights if he kept in shape all year round. Anno it was his eye in both fights but still. Putting your body through such brutal changes surely isn't good. He still has something to give tho and I have no idea how he can make 147, well I do but I have no idea how he and many others get away with it.

Thing with Brook is what path does he take at 154. Its so stacked with those talented american's at the top there's no easy route to a title and does he really have the heart for the hard slog back to the top at 31? Ideally he'd fight the winner of smith v Williams, but wont be an easy fight to make with allegedly. A win would by no means a forgone conclusion either (think it would be vs smith).

I understand what your saying mate but brook didnt quit against GGG dominic ingle did and against spence his head wasnt in the same place as before the GGG fight,if i was brook i would be looking to hook up with another promoter because its all down to hearn how his career has turned out. If i was brook's promoter i woukdnt of even mentioned GGG to my fighter,i would of had the nouse to say no thanks he is a 147 fighter you are a 160 fighter so go pick on someone your own size lol. Hearn wrecked brook not GGG and definitley not spence

I kind of agree.. Hearn offered GGG to Brook., but Brook said yes.. he was probably going to earn around £2m against Vargas. I can only guess he earned no more than £3m vs. GGG..

He was likely a favourite against Vargas and it would have been at Sheffield stadium.. he coulf have easily unified and got better fights at 147

True, but all that would have meant was giving Spence 2 belts instead of 1. Brook has fought 2 elite fighters in his career and both stopped him.

I really fear for Brook if the plan is moving upto 154lb to face top contenders..Charlo, Hurd, Andrade, Lara & Lubin would turn him inside out.

Khan is a nutcase to deal with but Hearn has failed Brook by not delivering that fight. Instead he was thrown in for a suicide mission against GGG then had to drag himself back to Welter and was so damaged from the previous fight he was beaten down infront of his hometown against Spence.

Ed needs to make this up to Kell by nailing Brook-Khan so he can get send Kell out on one last payday before retirement and not having to take any further damage.

Could've just vacated the IBF and ran with the WBO.. but he 'worked hard' for the IBF.. never would've vacated.

It doesn't matter how many belts he was going go give. 2 belts would have made it a much bigger fight.

So in our theory he basically ended sold out for 1 mill cause he would if got 2 for vargas probably got 3 for GGG and now he is beltless and in the wilderness within himself. He should of told hearn to make the fights at 147 and forget 160,he was no Sugar Ray Leonard

I think boxers need to think about what they are going to do when their careers are over a bit sooner. Brook will probably fight once maybe twice more before he doesn’t have boxing to focus on or motivate him. Carl Froch seemed to have things planned out nicely, with his property business and tv work
