Your vote for the most Over/Under rated boxers today...?
Plenty of un sung heroes in this game and on the flip side you've got the boxers that really don't deserve half the support & praise they receive.
Here's a few nominees:
Underrated
Ron "Winky" Wright - Finally put out Mosely's flame and will probably do the same in the re-match. Deserves to be up there with the best at the moment.
Arturo "Thunder" Gatti - Always referred to as a great warrior but allot of fight fans think his days are numbered as champ. IMO he's got potential to pull out some big upsets.
Jose Luis Castillo - Always seems not to get a mention. With an impressive record to date his close fights with Mayweather never seemed to get that much recognition.
Marco Antonio "Veneno" Rubio - Knocked out 23 of 23 wins with 21 falling before the 4th round. Surely the hottest prospect around today. Strangely doesn't seem to be being hyped up like your Bojado's or Cotto's. Maybe that's a good thing?
Jermain Taylor - Olympic medalist & well on his way to a title shot after a good performance against Marquez. The guy never gets mentioned.
Overrated
Chris Byrd - Agreed he has some reasonable names on the resume but has an extremely negative style and never won his title from a champion.
Bernard Hopkins - Don't care if you dis-agree I'm standing firm on this one. Check previous post for all the arguments... :x
James Toney - Only referring to him campaigning at heavyweight. In this respect people are getting far too carried away. Yes he out classed a completly shot Holyfield but this doesn't mean he is in the top five heavyweights. I give him a good shot at Byrd & Ruiz but that's it. Before you say it neither are a big test either.

I've got to disagree with Gatti being underrated, i think it's almost the opposite. He's always value for money, but he is far from being an elite fighter, in fact, whenever he steps up to that level, he's beaten. IMO, there are at the very least 7 fighters in his division who'd beat him. Can you imagine what Mayweather's going to do to him, if they ever make that fight. He's just keeping that belt warm for one of the top drawer fighters, if it's not Mayweather, it'll be someone else.
Jermain Taylor never gets mentioned? As far as I can see, every US fight fan is wetting their pants about Taylor, who's sitting around fighting light middles until Hopkins retires.
He does have an excellent jab, mind.
I think Johnny Nelson is criminally underrated globally, but I'm kind of of the opinion that Howard Eastman may be overrated, certainly after that Russian guy ran rings round him.
Tarver, Pacquiao would be in my overrated list. They're good, just not cream-your-pants good.
Paul Briggs and Danny Green would be in my underrated list, along with Kassim Ouma.

Froch is NOT over rated, in fact I think you guys under rate just how good he is by making snide comments and not re-watching his fights. This guy is going the distance, it's a shame you predudice yourself against him personally and don't recognise talent when its thereprofessionally.
Audley Harrison is without doubt the most over rated boxer, as is Tony Dodson...

If you are referring to Tatevosyan then you were watching a different fight. Tatevosyan back tracked all night long.Coconut wrote: but I'm kind of of the opinion that Howard Eastman may be overrated, certainly after that Russian guy ran rings round him.
Admittedly the scoring was a little closer than how the judges had it but what do you expect when you fight in such a negative fashion.

Yeah he was unlucky with a cut eye in the first round last time he met Santos too.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Margarito I think has been sidelined because of the more colourful Mayorga, who makes headlines, not always for the right reasons either.MightyWarrior wrote:Agreed, I think he's a good bet to crush Santos this weekend.DavidPayne wrote:

Margarito
Looks a good bill in Puerto Rico this weekend - the elusive Pinto finaly makes an appearance on the world stage - let's hope the wait is worth it - he's got an even tougher fight on his hands this time though.

Ruiz. If he was anywhere near as bad as people think he'd have disappeared long ago.
Overrated
Freitas - How he made it so far is beyond me.
Mayorga - Limited, one dimensional fighter. Thank god the hype isn't what it used to be.
Judah - Regardless of what you might have heard on the current scene, he doesn't have the skills, the brain, or the heart to be a great fighter.
Pacquiao - Good but not a world beater.

Mayweather....everyone is on his dick...apart from me. Granted he's got skills. But the Dougie and Steve over at Maxboxing were saying he's consistently fought the best oppostion. Those guys do a great job...but they are way off the mark there. What's he done recently. Beaten Corley, Ndou and Sosa. They are Roy Jones style opponents....the kind that fans used to threaten to boycott because.
Under-rated
Rafael Marquez...damn, being a bit harsh on Dougie Fisher today, but i nocticed he had Mark Too Sharp Johnson over Marquez in his p4p list. Marquez beats Johnson twice, and Tim Austin (who i rated very highly) and he still cant crack the top 10...what does he have to do?

take back my last comment. just checked Dogie's p4p liost...and it's been updated. But i swear he had Johnson ahead of Marquez a few months back. but the point still remains that Rafael is under-rated.adamiw wrote:Over-rated

Yep, Tatevosyan. I honestly thought Eastman was lucky to get that one. I'm a big Eastman fan but I thought he was made to miss and was getting caught too much. Eastman couldn't fight his own fight at any stage - I thought the Russian would get tired but he just didn't get tired enough. Certainly if we're talking strength of punches then Eastman landed the harder shots but I just don't think he landed enough.Matchfixer wrote:If you are referring to Tatevosyan then you were watching a different fight. I'm sorry but I have to defend Mayweather here. He has had a fair amount of critisism over the past few years, some just, some not. But you cannot deny this guy's talent or his bravery in taking fights.
For instance, look at some of his recent victims.....Castillo (twice) is now lightweight world champ, Corrales is now world champ, Chavez who has only just lost his title, Hernandez who again has just lost his title, and Corley was a brave fight to take on his debut at 140.
I'm not on Floyds dick either but I have to take my hat of to a gifted, brave fighter who is up there (deservedly) on most peoples P4P list.

Thanks Matchfixer, you are right Froch is under rated. Howeevr '007' perhaps you are the most over rated with sucha name as that. I have a good grip of myself thanks, Maybe if you had a grip on reality and stopped playing a secret agent you'd understand the finer points of quiality that Froch fights with, and the talent that is going from strength to strength. you could do with front row seats at his forthcoming fight. Watchin Hague fall first hand should change your thoughts. Froch is still learning but he without doubt, from what I have heard, one to watch.

Yeah your right David, i am also keeping a close eye on Grant-Woolnough, even though some people are saying Grant is totally shot he hasnt really suffered a career ending beating so it should be a live encounter.
I don't think Mayweather is overrated, the guy may be boring to watch but come on he is class all over, whoever mentioned Miguel Cotto i don't agree there either, he is progressing nicely and the fight with Kelson Pinto will be interesting to watch.
I think that Enzo Macarinelli is overrated, as soon as he fights someone who hits back then we can judge where he is going.
