Anyone know what is going on?

Post by Wilko »

On allegedly.tv today there is a press release confirming Williams v Maskaev.

On Fightnews.com however there is the following:

The announced Danny Williams vs. Oleg Maskaev match, reportedly set for October 9 in England, is off, according to Dennis Rappaport and Fred Kesch, promoter and manager respectively, for newly rejuvenated heavyweight contender Maskaev. In fact, it may have never even been on. According to the pair, Britain’s allegedly announced Williams vs. Maskaev eight days before either of them even heard from anyone representing the promoter. "It would appear that they were never really serious about making this match. It would have been a highly risky and dangerous fight for Williams to face a devastating puncher like Maskaev," said Kesch. Maskaev has won his last 8 fights, 7 by KO, including stopping Julius Francis in 2 rounds and Sedrick Fields in 9 rounds. In his last fight, July 23rd on ESPN2, he decisioned previously unbeaten David Defiagbon, a former Olympic silver medal winner. The fight Maskaev says he truly wants is against Vitali Klitschko, whom he stopped in one round when they were both amateurs. It is time for the 'top' heavyweights come to the plate. "I'm ready and able to beat any of them. Are you listening Klitschko, Brewster, Williams, Toney, Holyfield, Hoffman, Barrett, Byrd, Ruiz, Tyson, Tua, and McCline? It’s time to elevate the quality of the division and have the top heavyweights fight each other and see who is left standing. I promise you when the dust settles it will be Oleg Maskaev standing in the center of the ring.

Given SNs recent record in the fights that have ever happened, despite making announcements on their website, i think i'd be much more inclined to beleive Fight News.

But such is the nature of the business, ill beleive the fight is happening when i see them in the ring

I don't know or particuarly care about the Heavyweights much and prefer to just take every match as it comes rather than build my hopes up for matches that will probably never happen. As for Maskaev he appears to be building himself up in conversation with this type of talk, the type of chatter you hear most weeks from different fighters. So he KO'd Francis, Fields and decisioned Defiagbon? So what, he is still chin shot and as soon as he fights a high level hitter he will be stopped.
