Thanksgiving Eyeopener

Post by Ambling Alp II »

On Sunday, our family delivered a bag of Thanksgiving food to some homes in our area for a local charity. It was an eyeopener.
Obviously the homes were not in the best areas of town.
Most lived in small, rundown Studio apartments. (bedroom and living room is one room.) No one had a bed, some had mattresses on the floor. Most people didn't have a kitchen table. Some had old beat up couches and chairs. Only one place had a TV.
Sometimes kids lived there and sometimes not.
One lady had literally nothing. No furniture, bed, anything at all.
Everyone was appreciative, but she seemed to be even more so.

In the early 90s, I once lived in a place almost this bad for a couple of years, but at least I had a furnished place with and couch and a kitchen table.

One place had three people living it in. As we got back to the car, my daughter said, "my bedroom is bigger than the entire place that they live in".

Occasionally I drive through this are on the way to somewhere else. I really never thought how many people actually live there.

It got me to thinking that maybe food is not the best donation to make. Maybe it is a bed, a kitchen table, a couch etc.

Just wanted to get thoughts from people of what they think are good donations to those in desperate need.
