Cotto; Farewell to THE Most Overrated Boxer in History

Post by caldo2025 »

Have I enjoyed Miguel Cotta's career and the entertainment value of his ability and fights? Absolutely. I haven't missed a Cotto fight since 2006 perhaps so i'm aware that this opinion is fairly hypocritical. But here's a boxer that has been ushered around Boxing the last decade with the somewhat universal ATG label and I just don't understand it. We are talking about a boxer here that has lost every single big fight that he's ever been in. He's faced the top boxers in his division and never even came close to winning any of them.

Cotto has underachieved in his career in my opinion. Again, he's been a great entertainer and great for the sport of Boxing so I'll vote for him getting into the HOF if the only catagory was entertainment value. It may be ignorant to not mention what the Margarito fight might have meant to Cotta's promising career. That was a hellacious and shocking beating that he took in that fight and it would be unfair for me not to consider that it may have affected the trajectory of his career. But on the merit of his career, I don't think that he's done enough to be considered in such an elite lite.

Cotto is an elite fighter. Elite fighters don't have close fights with fellow elite fighters such as Sugar Shane & Floyd Mayweather.

He's only ever been outclassed once, against a prime Pacquiao in a night Pacquiao could have beaten probably just about any welter in history.

Cotto us an Elite fighter and is deservedly rated as such.

What a load of fúckíng bóllócks!

I have only spent five minutes reviewing Cotto’s resume, but here’s what I can tell, just by performing a superficial review:
• Faced eight unbeaten opponents
• Competed in 25 world title fights, excluding his next bout against Sadam Ali
• Captured world titles in four weight divisions(140lbs, 147lbs, 154lbs & 160lbs)
• A former pound-for-pounder (rated 7th)
• Former lineal and Ring champion
• Competed against countless world champions (possibly twenty... I’d need to count them, but I can't be far from the mark)
• Fought perhaps five future Hall-of-Famers (Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao, Alvarez, Martinez & Mosley)
• Headlined at least five pay-per-views

Some of the things that is posted to this forum makes by bum cheeks clench through sheer embarrassment about some of the preposterous claims made by self-proclaimed boxing “experts.” FFS! :o

I think Cotto is rated fairly. One of the most exciting fighters of his generation who was consistently involved in entertaining fights virtually every time out.

As for "He lost every big fight he ever had"

I don't know. I'd say the Judah, Mosley, Margarito 2 and Martinez wins were all pretty big wins for him.

I'd consider his effort against Mayweather to be one of Floyd's tougher nights as well. Certainly one of his 4 or 5 toughest nights. Floyd clearly won, but it was a competitive fight.

Ridiculous nonsense... Pacquiao got iced for 10 minutes by 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez...and ducked every great Welterweight that came up since.. Pacquiao never even mentioned the names of Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, or Errol Spence when they came up one by one... He flagrantly ducked Terence Crawford in favor of the super light hitting Jesse Vargas.. He's been fighting the Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley, Chris Algieri, Jesse Vargas etc. and going through super soft punchers one by one... I'm amazed he hasn't fought that other ducker MFer, Amir Khan... Errol Spence would knock Pacquiao's shitt into the middle of next month.

On the subject of Migel Cotto, I never was under the impression that he was rated super highly -- so I don't think he's overrated.. He beat Shane Mosley, Joshua Clottey, Sergio Martinez, Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley and other pretty fair boxers.. When you ask somebody to name a good boxer who Sugar Ray Robinson beat they can't give you a single name.

I thought Cotto had a fair chance to beat Floyd Mayweather.. He got his sweet jab on Floyd, forcing Roger to break out the king sized Q-Tips, dip them in coagulant, and keep shoving them up Floyd's nose.. They came out bright as cherries.. That impressed Cotto's trainer Pedro Diaz. He said, "He's bleeding. You're winning the fight." Cotto wasn't winning a damned thing. I kept pleading with Cotto to turn up the heat, but he never started throwing. He believed that idiot Diaz. You don't beat Floyd by a point. You have to go after him and beat him good.

The same thing in his next fight with Trout.. Cotto was a mile behind and Diaz kept telling Miguel he was winning.. Cotto finally fired the idiot.

Good point Kalan, Pacquiao wasn't an ATG the night he beat Cotto. He was probably would have got sparked by Maligmaggi. Or Zelenoff.

I’ve always thought Cotto was below elite level but was obviously world level. I wouldn’t exactly describe him as an ATG, but he would have been competitive in any era.

That depends on how stringent your criteria for an atg is. He's much more accomplished than wlad. About even with someone like Tyson or Pryor.

Tyson wasn't competitive with everyone when he was 41 years old.. Tyson was getting stopped by Kevin McBride at a much younger age.. Wladimir victim Mariusz Wach iced McBride and finished him.. Tyson is one of the few ATG Heavyweights with more KO losses Than Wladimir Klitschko... Wladimir also had many more successful World Title Fights and defenses.

So just because you agree to fight the best and lose to them all, you're an all time great? Interesting.

Martinez was a big win? I could have beaten Sergio that night and I tire bringing in the grocery bags. Sergio's knee was gone and he was almost 40. Sergio knocks Cotto out badly if they meet in their primes. Judah and Mosley (another overrated boxer) may get your picture up on the gym wall but you don't get into the ATG Christmas Party.

Slow your roll now, he was a very exciting and great fighter. He's not top 200. Boxing has a very rich history. Hit your local library and read up on it...or hell...use the internet.

You'd be well served to learn that Boxing didn't start in the year 2000.

And by the way. I'm not trying to insult you by saying this, so don't take it as an insult because that's not my intention. Everybody's gotta learn about the past at some point. You won't regret it. Boxing has a very fascinating history.

You have a very short memory.

Do u remember when we talked like 3 month ago and u told me you started following boxing around 2000 or 1999 i dont remember 100 % and i called you a newby because i folowed way earlier. Gilga, cotto is top 50, maybe 50-70, but 200 is disney, its on your litle fantasy. P4p a better boxer than guys like marciano or dempsey ever was. And even record wise he can hang with those guys since marciano fought 80 % cab driver opponents.

Doesn't matter if you started watching before I did, if you think Cotto is a Top 50 or 70 all time Boxer you're out of your mind. He's not Tito Trinidad, and Tito ain't Top 100 either.

I'm quite the obsessive kinda fan. Aside from all the Live Boxing I've watched in my time as a fan, I've always watched oodles and oodles of Classic Boxing on the internet, and through tape trading. So my knowledge of Boxing history extends far beyond merely the years I've been watching. Cotto is a great fighter. I'm not insulting him. I have all the respect in the world for him. But frankly he's probably not even one of the Top 300. Boxing is absolutely filled with marvelous talents that achieved so much. Cotto's achievements fall well short of many a legendary fighter of the past. That's just facts.

Doesn't mean he was a great fighter in his own right.

In a sport with a history that runs longer than the NBA, and the NFL's combined histories you're gonna have a lot of Legends.
