World champions aged 40 and above?

Post by Perseus »

With Adonis Stevenson becoming the latest addition to the small club of boxers holding a major belt at age 40 or older I am wondering how many boxers have done that.

Before throwing out any names the definition of "world champion" needs to be determined.
I would say anyone who held any of the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF or the linear championship at age 40.

I'm not looking to debate the quality of their title reign or the title itself I'm just trying to determine how many boxers held a major belt at 40.
Most of them only had a brief reign just past their 40th birthday with no successful defenses of their title but that's all it takes.

Heavyweights: George Foreman, Vitali Klitschko
Cruiser: Giacobbe Fragomeni, Guillermo Jones, Virgil Hill
Lightheavy: Bob Fitzsimmons, Archie Moore, Bernard Hopkins, Adonis Stevenson
Supermiddle: Thulani Malinga
Middleweight: Sam Soliman(oldest first time winner), Bernard Hopkins
Superwelter: Cornelius Bundrage

I don't know of any boxer who fought at welterweight and below holding a major belt at 40.

I count 12 boxers who have held a major belt at 40 or above.
Am I missing any?

She's vacated that title this week, but she does still hold the WBA female Flyweight title. She's not even the oldest female Japanese champion at the moment though, that is Nao Ikeyama who is the WBO Atomweight champion and is 48!

lol.
I hadn't thought about the women and I have no idea how many female boxers have held world titles at 40 or older.
