I found an account of this crazy match between Charlie Mitchell and Jem Mace, who at the time was 58
Round 1 Charlie Mitchell was all over Mace and knocked him down
Round 2 Was more even (No further info).
Round 3 Jem Mace managed to do better still and even knock Charlie Mitchell down
Round 4 Jem Mace was gassed and the fight was stopped early in this round. Charlie Mitchell was declared the winner.
The wording is ambigous but it sounds like it may have been scheduled to go further.

Re: Charlie Mitchell Vs Jem Mace 1890
Mace was quite critical of Mitchell. For virtually a generation Mace WAS the face of British boxing and he didn't care for new upstarts challenging his legacy (or stealing his spotlight).
Mace's reputation, in a sense, had taken a hit because he was recruited by the National Police Gazette in America to find someone, anyone, capable of dethroning Sullivan. He failed in his attempts, most spectacularly with Herbert Slade.
This fight, in my opinion, was to try and help Mace's image. He did well for a man of nearly 60 but he got beaten by the smaller, quicker, younger man. Mace had to concede Mitchell was "the man" and urged the Gazette to acknowledge Mitchell as Sullivan's top contender.

Just the typical banter you'd usually see in boxing circles, "He's not as good as I am," etc etc etc. Again, Mace had been the face of British boxing for forty years, and Mitchell was the upstart who was peeling away attention from Mace.
