Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Hi
Im involved with running a boxing prediction league and we all use your site avidly, so thank you for all your efforts.
But there is a huge debate over the round in which spence jr won over Lamont Peterson, you state round 7 but the official verdict after the fight was clearly 1 second of round 8.
Can you clarify your position please?
Many thanks

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Shouldn't be a debate. If someone said round 7, that's an error.
The fight officially was waved off just one second into the 8th round.

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
I am also intrigued about this being called a retirement at the end of round 7 by boxrec.
Jimmy Lennon Jr. clearly announced that the fight was stopped at 1 second of round 8. "On advice of the corner, the referee in charge stops the contest"

Exactly my view too.
I have discussed it directly with Dan Rafael who was ringside and gets the official score card which stated 1 second of round 8 stoppage

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
BoxRec records such wins as Retired round 7, time 3:00. There was no action in round 8. There are countries in which, when the fighter retires in between rounds, he is still given a ceremonial 10-count at the beginning of next round. But BoxRec records such fights as I stated above, not TKO 8, time 0:10. That's simply the policy that BoxRec has chosen to follow...

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Thank you for the explanation.
As the ring announcer stated 1 second of round 8 which apparently is the official verdict of said fight, why do anything alternately, it's basically dismissing the official ruling.

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
So boxrec has chosen to follow a policy that means records appear here in a different fashion to what is announced in the ring on the night and is recorded on the official scorecards. This does not seem right to me, surely the purpose of boxrec is to report the facts as they occurred on the evening. Is there any way this bout can be reviewed by boxrec for classification purposes? There is footage available on youtube of the fight and the result being announced after the contest.claudevsq wrote: ↑22 Jan 2018, 05:44 BoxRec records such wins as Retired round 7, time 3:00. Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
And I'll third the motion.
The accurate time and round that a bout is officially halted can often mean a hell of a lot to gamblers.
If there's a debate, for whatever reason, on the official time of stoppage, many might turn to BoxRec as an authoritative source of information.
Here they would be misled.
As the Bible of Boxing statistics (sorry Ring Magazine) BoxRec needs to reconsider policy in this matter.

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
That is exactly the point.
I have had private messages from the administration stating the fight was stopped between rounds hence their verdict of round 7 tko. But that is not what happened.
I thought boxrec was a site that records official boxing information, not that what is based on opinion or interpretation??

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
From what I could tell the fight was stopped just before the bell to start round 8

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Boxrec does follow correct processes. When it's a fight in California, a TKO is simply called a KO and Boxrec identifies this.
The 8th round definitely began before the referee called off the fight. Doesn't matter if there was any action or not. Is it hard to change the result to 8th round TKO?

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Yeah that is exactly the issue. I understand it that boxrec records the official verdicts not its own interpretation of what happened.
Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
I am going to try and get to the bottom of this.
It states the following in the post named "Please read before posting" in this section of the forum
"Do not ask BoxRec to change information on an officially locked show.
If you don’t agree with the official rendered verdict; contact the
commission and take it up with them to change it.
If you win your case, they will send BoxRec an addendum with the
correction and we will change it ASAP.
They hear from BoxRec quite often; if they hear from you, it is only
a one time event. "
How can I check what the official result is from the New York State Athletic Commission? I have checked their website and there does not seem to be a section with results.
Maybe I should email them and get the official results but surely they are provided somewhere?

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
I have an email reply from the Ibf stating the official verdict from the commission was received yesterday and it confirmed the official verdict was 1 second of round 8
Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
So as I read the procedure we then need to get in contact with the NYSAC and ask them to ask boxrec to change the boxrec result?Davejshore wrote: ↑24 Jan 2018, 12:32 I have an email reply from the Ibf stating the official verdict from the commission was received yesterday and it confirmed the official verdict was 1 second of round 8

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Ok pal, I will attempt to make contact with them.
What is disappointing is that I'm asking the admin why they haven't got exactly what was the official verdict, if the ring announcer states round 8 why have they decided to do something different???

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
I think this is just a procedural thing.
They have a process in place to record results and also a process to apply for a change of those results, and if you want something changed you have to go through those channels.
I can imagine instances where people may want to manipulate results etc and boxrec need to have a way of making sure this does not happen, hence all the red tape in this case.
Slowly but surely I think we will get in sorted.

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
My reason to follow this up is just to make sure in my own mind that boxrec is a properly functioning and transparent website.
I have no doubt the same thing will happen again at some stage in the future and if we can't get this situation sorted then I will be more hesitant to try again in the future.

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
Very true sir.
I and many fans from the uk use boxrec relentlessly and it is a fantastic site, but we need to know that the information is genuine not biased or interpretation of events.
It was straight forward and clear what the verdict was Saturday night.
I have exchanged direct messages with admin of this site and they refuse to acknowledge the verdict repeatedly stating it was stopped between rounds 7 and 8.
I find it hard to grasp how they come to that conclusion???

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
It was clear between rounds 7 and 8 that the fight was going to be stopped, but the official point of the stoppage has to be when the referee calls halt to the bout and not when the trainer tries to get the attention of the referee.
I would not waste your time with an individual who fails to see this.
Just send the email to the NYSAC asking them to ask boxrec to change the result.
I will also send an email to the NYSAC asking for them to get boxrec to acknowledge the official result, two emails might work better than one!

Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
You're right sir. I will compose mine shortly and see what we get back!
Re: Spence jr v Peterson stoppage
According to info I received, Peterson's corner pulled the plug before the bell sounded for round 8.
Some commissions rule it TKO of completed round & some TKO of next round whether bell sounded or not.
To lessen confusion we record it RTD of completed round.
Cheers
