Jacobs wants Truax and may stay at 168lbs; Thurman-Vargas (April)

"ROZIER: JACOBS WANTS SHOT AT TRUAX, PLANS TO CAMPAIGN AT 168"

Andre Rozier [Jacobs' trainer]: "At this time BJ Saunders only wants to fight opponents of his choosing and I know it's not Danny. I have my mind set on Danny boxing for the IBF super middleweight championship of the world against Caleb Truax. Truax expressed an interest in rematching Danny to get revenge for his twelfth round TKO loss to Danny [in 2015]. Let's get it on! We're here, we're ready, let's do it!"

"I really am [surprised that Saunders is so reluctant to fight Danny], but I think he knows it's not the same dynamic. He knows that fighting against Danny is a totally different ballgame than fighting against Lemiuex. Lemiuex was like cannon fodder for him and he did a wonderful job in that bout, but it's not the same dance with Danny..."

"Basically, it would be up to what the waters present. I think the middleweight picture is going to be locked and stocked with Canelo [Saul Alvarez] and GGG [Gennady Golovkin] for a moment. A lot of people don't realize that these two can go at it for another year and half, and where does that leave Danny? Waiting for them? Saunders only wants to fight hand picked opponents, so where does that leave Danny once again? Waiting for something that's not going to happen? Let's be real about it, when you don't see the water is safe to swim in, you go in another pool. If we do get the chance to challenge for Truax's super middleweight championship, I think we're going to be comfortable and we just might stay at super middleweight."

"Porter says Keith Thurman v Jessie Vargas is a done deal for April"

“I was told to fight Andre Berto, and then Adrian Granados,” said Porter to Fight-Hype. “After that, Keith Thurman said, ‘let me fight someone else real quick.’ He’s got Jessie Vargas, who I don’t think is going to be a walk in the part for him. We’ll see what he’s been doing since he’s been off. We’ll see what he’s got left, and hopefully we’ll be taking care of business with Keith Thurman a little bit later this year. I’m pretty sure this is official for April,” said Porter.

”I think Jessie Vargas is a little bit more than a tune-up,” Shawn Porter said. ”That’s what he wants to do. I’m not here to play. These guys are playing. Keith Thurman has been playing for over a year. He thinks he’s going to get in there and tune-up with Jessie Vargas. This is going to be a great fight for him. After that, hopefully no slipups, and then it’s me. I’m just doing the best I can to wait and be patient and do the best I can to stay in shape and be ready to go when I get the call,” said Porter.

Thoughts?

For the record, Danny Jacobs isn’t the mandatory challenger for Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO world middleweight title and the American’s team have never made an attempt (i.e. submitted an offer) to face the Brit. Also Jacobs is promoted by Eddie Hearn, whilst Saunders is promoted by Fwánk Warren and it’s politically challenging (almost impossible) to see fighters from both camps face each other.

Danny Jacobs may not be given the opportunity to challenge for the IBF super-middleweight crown either, because Truax will be obliged to participate in an immediate rematch against James DeGale within the next three months and if ‘Chunky’ regains his title and chooses to stay with Fwánk Warren, then this will also scupper the possibility of that bout.

Also, Jacobs isn’t rated by the IBF either at 168lbs, so he’s not guaranteed a shot at that title… or at least he can’t force their champion to face him.

It’s a tad hypocritical for Jacobs to criticise Saunders' desire “to fight opponents of his choosing”, whilst he himself prefers to share the ring with a fighter he’s already beaten instead of facing some of the other top-rated middleweights (i.e. Derevyanchenko; Charlo; Andrade etc.). Danny blatantly accuses other fighters of being “ducks”, but he hasn’t even attempted to make those fights!

I personally doubt that any of the young gun 160lb-ers really want to fight each other during 2018. They all want to face GGG and Canelo for the big money fight, so don’t expect to see any big bouts at middleweight this year, other than the Golovkin-Canelo rematch.

Of course. Why risk a loss against Charlo, BJS or even Andrade or Derevo if you can get a safe title shot at more comfortable weight?

It seems like pie in the sky stuff.
The words come easily, but the reality just isn't there.
Saunders Vs Jacobs - not easy, and probably not this year.
Truax Vs Jacobs - not going to happen. Truax's belt will either go back to Degale, or to his mandatory, which isn't Jacobs.
Having Eddie is hopefully going to get Jacobs a decent fight, who knows :maybe: but Eddie is the one to ask, because it seems like Jacobs doesn't have a clue

In Jacobs, Charlo, Andrade & Derevyanchenko we have four very good fighters who are treading water in a division where the two biggest names will be facing each other again in May & possibly against after that in September.

And if we get a winner from that there's a good chance Saunders will be next in line.

So these four against each other would be great for us fans & also see who's most deserving of a title shot. Most of us have no interest in any of them fighting boxers ranked between 25 to 50.

Who are Charlo, Andrade & Derevyanchenko handled by?

There's some good fights for Jacobs at 160 but he'd be a welcome addition to the 168 division. He's a big middle anyway so why not?

I knew everybody in or around Super Middleweight would be gunning for Truax. A guy like that that gets a major upset victory always has a target on his back because he's seen as beatable.
