Is it generally accepted that Eubank Sr. had the best chin in British Boxing history?
I've heard this said on forums quite a few times.
Re: Is it generally accepted that Eubank Sr. had the best chin in British Boxing history?
Has to be up there. Ricky Burns has a cracking chin as did Froch and Joe Calzaghe. Del Boy Chisora can take a dig. Wayne McCullough and Eamonn Magee deserve a mention as well. Two hard feckers!
Re: Is it generally accepted that Eubank Sr. had the best chin in British Boxing history?
Yep McCullough sprang to mind immediately. The likes of Hamed and Morales couldn't put a dent in him.
Other obvious one for me is Henry Wharton - Mickey can elaborate, but I can't recall anyone, including Benn and Eubank, even making him blink with their bombs. In fact, should have mentioned Wharton in the Cult Heroes thread as used to love watching him!

Though he was stopped 6 times (4 in the first round when you can be caught cold even if you're very tough, Emile Griffith for instance was caught cold by Rubin Carter, the other was a 3rd round KO, and the last was a corner retirement)
I think you'd have to consider Ted Kid Lewis. Only 6 KO losses out of 238 fights is nothing to take lightly.
One of those KO losses came against Georges Carpentier who outweighed him by over 20 pounds.

And of course can't forget Joe Bugner - we all know the big men can seriously bang so he clearly had one hell of a chin.

Oliver McCall is my shout. Insane ability to take a punch. Took bombs from Lewis with no discernible reaction.

Bugner and McCullough would have to be up there.

Carl Froch, Steve Collins, Clinton Woods and Joe Calzaghe all had fantastic chins too.

He had a decent but not best ever chin. He got kod in one round on his debut though he was wrong. He was also quite a defensive fighter so didn’t catch that many shots

You do realise Oliver McCall is not British? The title is a bit inexact but I assumed in meant British boxer rather than ‘boxed in britain’. Otherwise Ali would be closejamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 02:42 Oliver McCall is my shout. Insane ability to take a punch. Took bombs from Lewis with no discernible reaction.
Re: Is it generally accepted that Eubank Sr. had the best chin in British Boxing history?
how do we define chin. like, are recovery abilities a part? because i wouldnt say that joe cal was that hard to hurt if you landed , at least at a 'great' level. he stood out for being hurt one minute and fine the next,

Merely decent is a bit harsh fella - took enough shots from .a prime Frazier and his vaunted left hook without buckling. Went the distance with Lyle as well.boxingknockout wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:14He had a decent but not best ever chin. He got kod in one round on his debut though he was wrong. He did get Kod 4 times though, by Welch, Bruno, Shavers (ok!Deserter wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:38Merely decent is a bit harsh fella - took enough shots from .a prime Frazier and his vaunted left hook without buckling. It’s a style thing as well. It’s like saying Herol Graham had a good chin cos he only got kod by big punchers

Eubank was put over a few times, but never looked genuinely ‘hurt’ with wobbly legs and unaware.
I can’t think of a better U.K. chin than Eubank.... he also took serious hard flush blows from the lies of Nigel Benn and still was compos mentis

Mate, dropping in the likes of Welch and Bruno is even harsher given it was at least 10 years past his prime - plenty of fighters with great chins lost late in their careers or in comebacks.boxingknockout wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:41He did get Kod 4 times though, by Welch, Bruno, Shavers (ok!Deserter wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:38Merely decent is a bit harsh fella - took enough shots from .a prime Frazier and his vaunted left hook without buckling. Accept the defensive style point though, there's validity in factoring that in. Graham is stretching the comparison though

Yes maybe! Hahahahaha But when considering the best, I think Bugner lies behind the top 10. Some names I like:Deserter wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:50Mate, dropping in the likes of Welch and Bruno is even harsher given it was at least 10 years past his prime - plenty of fighters with great chins lost late in their careers or in comebacks.boxingknockout wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 08:41He did get Kod 4 times though, by Welch, Bruno, Shavers (ok!) and one Paul Brown.

McCullough
Wharton
Eubank
Joe Calzaghe
Froch
On a journeyman level Miguel Matthews and the Smith twins (RIP) were solid as a rock
Eubank Snr has to be my number 1. His head even looks impregnable. Can’t remember his legs ever ‘going’

Wharton shipped some crazy punishment, was dropped once by Nardiello when caught square on by a back hand. Wasn't hurt. Journeyman Paul Bonson had one of the best I've seen. Insane.

I think the only time Eubanks legs might have trembled slightly was when Michael Watson had him down late in their rematch, just before Eubank dropped him with the uppercut, but his chin was insanely good. Froch is also up there, took a lot of straight right hands from Groves in their first bout. Always felt Wharton was unlucky not to win a world title, took Benn and Eubanks best shots and I honestly thought he'd have enough to beat Robin Reid.boxingknockout wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 09:51Yes maybe! that was pure exhaustion in my opinion, the actual punches watson 'put him down' with were pretty innocuous, glancing and not heavy shots- Watson himself was really fatigued by that point and Eubank was simply wilting from the paceJackson328 wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 11:06I think the only time Eubanks legs might have trembled slightly was when Michael Watson had him down late in their rematch, boxingknockout wrote: ↑25 Jan 2018, 09:51Yes maybe! Yes hard to look past Chris Eubank & Wayne too.
Yet even though he got dropped loads, because he usually leapt in chin up & got clocked clean by some huge punchers, no one came close to ever knocking out Naz - he always bounced up ready to knock the other guy out...ATG Barrera didn’t even try to knock him out - Great chin had Naz
