Guys you didn't like but now do...

Post by Stuarty »

ThIs thread is inspired by BJS. I didn't like the guy before but I have really warmed to him and I'm a fan now. I can't wait to see him fight again. I think he has the ability to be one of our best from these shores. He now comes across quite funny and a decent guy in his interviews etc....

Anyway, is there anyone you didn't like but became a fan of?

jorge linares for coming back, toughening up , and spoiling a bunch of cherry picks that were based off his past showings of vulnerabilities

I used to hate watching Skeete, he went through a run of super boring fights a few years ago. But I quite like watching him now, he’s a bit more aggressive than he used to be.

Bellew. Found him nauseating and full of bs, his interviews were painful and no wonder Boxing Asylum started the Bellew of the Week. Then, as I have said a couple times here, I met him the day before the Haye fight and he was really cool, gave his time selflessly and spent time with the fans when no cameras were around. Just a genuine good guy.

Povetkin when he was ducking Wlad for 4+ years. I'm still far from his biggest fan but I respect him now.

Crolla. I used to root for Gary Sykes as a Yorkshire man and picked against crolla a few times but he has shown real class and heart to reach the top.

Amir khan. I think he did have a big head and used to talk too much but I've grown to like him through the years.

Never liked Froch when he was coming up horrid style and overrated himself but totally proved he was a top fighter after becoming world champion, one of the best but he should think himself lucky he didnt fight Calzaghe though.

Eubank Sr. Was a firm Nigel Benn fan. Came to appreciate Sr later on in his career.

He keeps fighting lame opposition.

He's still very boring.

I think Degale probably falls into this category for me. Found him too arrogant in terms of his persona back in the day, but I think he's become more humble as he's matured and he's also earned my respect in the ring as he's been through some real wars.
I can't say I like him, but I do feel a bit sorry for O'Hara Davies, as whatever he is in the ring, he's been a lamb to the slaughter outside it recently - absolutely hung out to dry and clearly baffled and confused by the whole affair. Painfully out of his depth.

Degale for me too, thought he was a right cock to begin with, buy he calmed right down and went to the states and mixed with some top fighters, got to respect him for that, hope it was just an off night and he can come back well, could be some massive fights for him after the super six is over.

I used to like DeGale, but now I don't because he is a moron who is too stupid to get off the bloody ropes.

He is absolutely awful on the ropes.

Why would a fighter with so little talent at fighting off the ropes keep going there?

Does he think he's slick or something? Clown!

I was always a sort of fan as I was well proud of him going to the Olympics at 17.

But he was throwing it away & being a dick.

But the move to Ingle has changed him (along with the lesson learnt by watching Fury implode) & I mentioned this in a thread a couple of months back. He'll always have rough edges but he moved from boy to man over the last year.

As for fighters I didn't like I suppose I am a fan of them all until they give me a reason not to.

I didn't like Nigel Benn when he was coming through, he seemed like a loud mouth bully. Changed my mind after the way he accepted defeat against Michael Watson gracefully and came back in America, the Barkley blowout sealed it for me. Ended up revering him after this

About the only fighter that has ever won me over from really disliking him to becoming a big fan is James Toney.

More fighters I've been a fan of have lost me as a fan due to things they've done than the other way around a lot of the time.

Most fighters I'm indifferent to, and I just want to see the best man win. Every now and then though I have a strong like or dislike of a fighter though.

It's more fun actually when you have a strong feeling one way or another because for me personally I get way more into the fights when I have a bit of an emotional investment in the outcome.

:TU: excellent post

He also took the Eubank loss like a real man, despite (in his own words post-fight) 'despising' Eubank he still gave him his due

His last display was great but I still can't stand him, he's an odious obnoxious prick.

I thought that as well but I've watched a lot of interviews recently and he seems to have grown up a bit. Comes across a decent guy.

By the way.

Don't know if anybody caught this, but did anybody, but me notice during the Saunders/Lemieux fight when they put Saunders' son on the Big Screen that the crowd booed him?

That's gotta be a first huh? A Boxer's son being almost unanimous booed by the audience?

It seemed like I heard a slight snicker from one of the commentators, but they didn't say anything about it.
