boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
Drawing upon that excellent thread on boxers being more effective than they looked.... What about the opposite, how about boxers that look the business, seem to have it all, but somehow didn't quite do it.
1st one for me - James Hare.... when he was coming through I thought he was the real deal, I loved his movement and his slick ability to slip and make fighters pay - but it just never seemed to happen for him as he stepped up beyond British title level.

I interviewed him once. He was a right arrogant prick. Was glad his career came to little. His opinion of himself exceeded his ability.stujones wrote: ↑06 Feb 2018, 16:23 Drawing upon that excellent thread on boxers being more effective than they looked.... Good thread. Brings to mind the phrase 'flatters to deceive', what fighters flatter/flatter to deceive?
Tyrone Nurse?
Gavin
Going back
Alex Arthur looked to have all the tools but underperformed with them
Umm.

now granted he had some pretty good wins, but devon alexander had a lot of flashy but ineffective moments. he had plenty of speed and stuff but he in a lot of fights struggled to get the distance right and ended up either punching from out of range or just being really inaccurate in general.
the fight with kotelnik was a good show of one limited talent guy maximizing his effectiveness while the faster guy was having a lot of inaccuracy

another one for me is felix verdejo. just looks to have all the talent tools at times, but lately is really struggling to put it together and is having issues with limited opponents
did anyone see that us card last week with the prospect junior younan? he was a good highlight of this. ridiculously fast hands and movement and stuff but struggled seriously to land clean punches and just didnt have things working together right.

also adrien broner. hes actually got some pretty good talent with his fast hands, reflexes, and decent power for 140 at least, but seemingly less gifted fighters trouble him

Don’t know if many will remember but Ahder ALI boxed in The Commonwealth Games won the gold medal for Pakistan (looked Chinese) allegedly wouldn’t let him get on the plane with a 3-5 fight Clause. He just didn’t cut it at the time I was a few weights lighter then him holding my own and putting it on it which shouldn’t happen, he ended up giving him his contact back.

That guy Povetkin is fighting next.
Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
price fits into the 'front runner' category fo sho. the guys who are offensively powerful are the most flattered vs weak opposition. vs a breathing punching bag, someone like kudrashov might look more impressive than usyk for example
and then ad in that price has an especially big set of weaknesses when it comes to guys that will actually fight back. so you get this big ass discrpancy betweenn how he looks winning vs losing. although now even when he wins he looks bad.
Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
Kevin Mitchell, had the look of a potential world class fighter and successful at British/ebu level, but never seemed able to win the big fights.
Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
Brilliant shout. That's what I meant - fighters who seem to have it all but for some reason it just doesn't happen and you cannot place why.... the example of Frankie Gavin that has been mentioned, if he had to the dedication and fought at his proper weight, perhaps he still could have made world honours - we can see why he didn't make.... with Kevin Mitchell though, the man took Carl Johansson's best, he took Jorge Linares' best, but against Burns he couldn't even take his jab - most odd.

My number 2 shout - Danny Williams.
In an era when the likes of John Ruiz (who is one for the other thread) were winning world titles as was Shannon Briggs - Danny coming through looked like had had the tools to be a world class Heavyweight.... good defense, good power, nice little engine and seemed to have a good boxing IQ. Yes, experience was a factor in the first Francis fight, but then he avenged that was a classy display - then came Sinan Samil Sam (not only my favourite boxing name ever but another one for the other thread) and Danny ended up one big dissapointment.

Another great call - at lightweight when he outclassed a solid EBU level fighter like Gavin Rees he really did look like the P4P talent he was hyped up to be. I know he is an arsehole but he always looks the part, looks motivated, can take a decent shot, and there wasn't a track record of him fading. It was hard to find any weakness in his game, so I am pretty astounded that in his prime years he has become this gate keeper to world class.

Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
He was just so strange to fathom, was it nervous energy or what - but the Mitchell who fought the likes of John Murray, Carl Johansson and Jorge Linares (too name a few) I am still convinced would have won in all of his world title fights (barring Linares obviously). He looked relaxed, had a lot of experience - nobody can say he wasn't deserving of his title fights - but somehow he would completely and utterly underperform and it wasn't for a lack of effort or heart - he tried desperately vs Katisidis and Burns, but was just torn appart in most odd displays and then the one time he seems to get it right his body lets him down.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 10:22stujones wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 10:11Brilliant shout. One of the saddest retirements I can remember cos really believed that it might still happen for him. allegedly was bang on with his early comparison between Mitchell and Wayne Rooney - both looked like true world beaters, both didn't quite make their achievements of their youthful potential.

Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
personally I would say beating Murray the way he did was clear evidence of world-level talent/ability
Re: boxers who looked more effective than that are / were.
Absolutely, but then when it came to the actual moment on 2 of the 3 occassion he just fall apart - against Linares he was largely unlucky.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 11:44 personally I would say beating Murray the way he did was clear evidence of world-level talent/ability
It just seems so odd that a man who could take John Murray's best, could take Carl Johansson's best and could take Jorge Linares' best - couldn't even take a jab from Burns.

Dare I say Richard ‘The Secret’ Williams?

Errol Christie, Vernon Sollas, Billy Knight...

Dominick Guinn - Looked great & looked like he was going to be the man to fill the void left by Lennox Lewis, but alas not.

Donald Curry - A bit harsh as we won titles, but he looked stunning around the time he KOd McCrory & I thought he was going to go onto become a bona fide ATG, but it never quite happened for him.

Very true.
That magazine cover is a tad depressing.
Where did it all go wrong?
