Came across a tweet yesterday that screenshotted an extract from one of Mike Coppinger's articles on the Ring Magazine's website...
https://www.ringtv.com/528284-deontay-w ... fy-titles/
"The great Rocky Marciano reached 49-0 and then retired. If Wilder can indeed reach his lofty goal, he won’t just be undisputed. He’ll be legendary."
Initially I thought about how bizarre a statement it was from that individual. Afterwards, though, it made me think about the Ring Magazine as a whole.
It's the most famous boxing publication in the world, they have their own lineal title and the p4p list. But how do you regard the magazine today? How prestigious is it in 2018? How does that compare with years gone by? If there has been a change in the prestige of the Ring, when and why did this occur?
The prestige of the RING Magazine
Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
coppinger is awful and hugely biased to americans
coppinger, rosenthal, and most of the regular ring writers are nothing special at all

Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
Not all that long ago The Ring title was held in very high regard. Bernard Hopkins v Joe Calzaghe was billed as a World Title fight with only The Ring title at stake and nobody had any issue with that at all.
The Ring Championship is barely even mentioned these days. Apart from the recent Tyson Fury issue, I can’t actually recall another time recently that it’s been mentioned.
The magazine and how essential it is seem to have gone the same way. Once upon a time it would be in every newsagents and I would never miss a copy. Now it’s difficult to find and I can’t recall the last time I bought a copy. Print publications are struggling generally but specialist magazines usually survive. In the U.K. at least I’m not sure The Ring will.

Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
yep its pretty much just mentioned here and there with fury, or at least was as he and his fans tried to grasp onto some legitimacy as still being the real man at hw despite not fighting since 2015 and going off the rails
honestly i think most ppl stopped caring. it had a 'hot' phase a few years back but thats well over

Lost its shine when Oscar bought it
Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
Used to buy it every month but eventually got tired of it being about three months out of date. Pre the internet it didn't matter so much but with information so easily available, reading old news becomes a bit pointless.
Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
This.
The Age of Print has lost its importance nowadays.
Also, Rocky's 49-0 record is a load of bollocks, in my humble opinion
Yes he did win 49 professional fights but after his debut his trainer took him back to the amateurs (where he won some & lost some) so he didn't win 49 consecutive fights.
So technically his record is 49-0 but it's tainted for Mr Taansend
Re: The prestige of the RING Magazine
I do not even use the website anymore. It is boring drivel and clear agendas and I am starting to dislike that FIsher guy (and his associates) who brings personality and personal likes and dislikes in too much. He talks shite, him and Kim are utter cockwombles and that Montera dude does not seem to understand this sport one little bit. A cliché of cnuts
