how good is luis nery?

Post by jamamb »

two brutal wins over yamanaka and he looked a little beast. but i remember coralles beating uchiyama twice in japan and then quickly going down not long after

how good is nery? i notice hes been down a few times but seems to recover fast. reminds me a bit of kirkland with how he comes forward so agressively and can sometimes be open a caught and dropped. though nery looks better skilled and not so chinny.

From what I've seen so far (which admittedly isn't a lot) he looks the part. Jury's still out though. Caught cheating and unprofessional with the weight there plus he's arguably caught Yamanaka at the right time.

Impossible to say how good he is.

First time, he was caught for 'roids. Why does everyone act like this is some inconsequential thing these days? Have we become numb to it*?

Second time, he weighs in two weight divisions north of the other fella, & doesn't bother hitting the weight.

Yamanaka was old & on his way out, though still very fun to watch. It's impossible to tell how good Nery would be without being 'roided up like MechaGodzilla or fighting someone his own size. Possibly he would've beaten Yammy anyway, what with youth & strength & all, but how much of that comes from cheating (& let's face it, in the two most despicable ways you can in a combat sport short of glove-tampering) & how much from innate ability? How can we as fans untwine that from ringside or TV, when he's obviously bent as fornicate?

Remember when people were saying Broner was a god? He was refusing to make weight & gaining a stone after weigh-ins, beating up hand-picked guys way below his natural weight. His body gave out & he couldn't weight-drain any more & had to fight guys his own size & all of a sudden he looked mortal. Nery's worth is even more occluded than that, because of the drugs cheating issue.

As I said in the other thread, Nery's gone straight to the top of my "Deserves a shoeing" list.

*: just in case you missed it, I'm with Bellew on this general topic. Get caught drug cheating, you should be banned for fuckin' life: if you had it in your system, trace amounts or no, no ifs no buts, fvck off out of the sport forever, you should get criminal charges brought against you like Resto & Panama Lewis. It's a dangerous enough sport as it is. Cheat like that & a guy doesn't get back up, it's fuckin' murder.

Nery came in 3 pounds overweight after a previous failed drug test.

I'm no protester. However, I will refuse to watch this guy until he acts like a professional.

He probably needs to fight someone like Jesse Magdaleno or Rey Vargas for us to find out, and return a series of clean tests in the process.

Drug cheat, overweight, question marks over what Yamanaka had left... the jury's out for now.

As has already been said, he looks the part but two wins that include a failed drug test and missing weight by that much doesn't bode well for him.
