As a Middlesbrough fan, I have to point out that his playing days are often overlooked. He scored bags of goals at the rate of almost one a game. Unbelievable and awesome even then.
A knee injury did for him in his twenties.
Everyone has a Cloughie story. He brought Forest to play my hometown of Darlington in a pre-season friendly when I was a kid. I was sat right behind his dugout before the teams came out, daydreaming, with my feet up on the edge of the bench.
I hadn't even seen him come out and before I knew it, he gave me a right clip round the lug and told me to shift my feet! He brought me round to sit with the subs shortly after and make sure my programme got plenty of signatures.
The FA were a bunch of cowards to avoid his appointment as England manager when he was obviously the best man for the job.
RIP to a true sporting legend in the days when the word is well over used.

Got a great video in which Clough selects his greatest England XI, quite controvesial as he leaves out Bobby Moore and Billy Wright. Filmed in 1989 he was in great form.
A truly great football icon, his green jumpers were missed when he retired in 1993.
Greatest manager never to manage his country? I think without a doubt - nearly accepted a post to manage Wales in the early 90's. I would have loved that.
