Scoring rounds
Hello,
Apologies if the answer to this question is completely obvious but it has been on my mind for a while.
If a fighter is knocked down once in a round, does that round have be scored 10-8 in favour of the boxer who scored the knockdown.
Using the following case study as an example;
'Alpha has dominated the round, he is the clear winner, until with 5 seconds to go Bravo scores a knockdown seemingly out of nowhere.'
Does the rulebook state that such a round be scored 10-8 in favour of Bravo? Or could it be 10-9 to Bravo, in recognition that Alpha was winning the round, therefore loses 1 point for the knockdown, taking his points for 10 to 9 for that round. Or could there possibly be a 9-9 draw in recognition of the fact Alpha had clearly won the round, but loses a point for the knockdown, however Bravo hadn't won the round so doesn't gain a point.
Hope that question makes sense!
Cheers

Re: Scoring rounds
It would be 10-9 Bravo for me. It's up to the judges discretion how to score the round, which would either be 10-9 or 10-8 Bravo. There has been a few times in the past a fighter has been knocked down and still only lost the round 10-9.

Re: Scoring rounds
There isn’t an automatic 10-8 rule following a knockdown. It seems to be a common misconception amongst casual fans and professional Sky Sports commentary teams.

Re: Scoring rounds
Or a 9-8 round. I scored Joshua-Wlad round 5 a 9-8 in favour of Joshua. Which is just the same as scoring it a 10-9 i guess.
Re: Scoring rounds
It’s a 10 point must scoring system so as others have stated the someone must be scored 10 and a point is deducted for each knockdown and a point reduced for losing the round. If a fighter is knocked down but hammered the other guy he person who has been knocked down would lose 1 point for the knockdown but wouldn’t be deducted a point for losing the round. However the other fighter would still get a 10 point round.
If both fighters are knocked down and equal amount of times the knockdowns cancel each other out and you score from 10 again.
It’s crazy how many pundits get this wrong.
You can score a 10 - 8 round without a knockdown though by being so impressive that the judge jizzes their pants.

You can’t score a 9-8 it’s the 10 point must system someone has to score 10.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 15:47 Or a 9-8 round. I scored Joshua-Wlad round 5 a 9-8 in favour of Joshua. Which is just the same as scoring it a 10-9 i guess.

Re: Scoring rounds
Its a 10-8 round unless the fighter who has scored the knockdown has been deducted a point then it goes to a 9-8 round.

Re: Scoring rounds
Because it is a penalty on the scorecard for the fighter. If a fighter wins a round normally and gets deducted a point it goes to a 9-9 even round.
Re: Scoring rounds
yep this is definitely correct the 10 must score is before penalties for fouls so they get deducted off the 10 points.brian13 wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 16:54Because it is a penalty on the scorecard for the fighter. If a fighter wins a round normally and gets deducted a point it goes to a 9-9 even round.

Re: Scoring rounds

The scoring system used in professional boxing is called the 10-Point Must System. These are the basics for scoring a round:
• Judges score on a 10-point scale. Most rounds will end 10-9, with the more dominant boxer receiving 10 points, the other receiving 9.
• If a boxer is knocked down, he loses a point. If a boxer is knocked down twice, he loses two points. If both fighters are knocked down, the knockdowns cancel each other out.
• While uncommon, if a fighter completely dominates a round but doesn’t score a knockdown, a judge can still score that round 10-8.
• If a judge deems the round completely even, both fighters receive 10 points.
•When the referee sees fit, he can take away a point or two for an intentional foul; he can do the same for unintentional ones, but that usually occurs after at least a warning.

May be a stupid question, but what if judge docks A a point for holding and then later, B a point for low blows.
Is it 9-9 or do they cancel each other out and goes to 10-10 again.

Re: Scoring rounds
I think knockdowns cancel each other out bit penalties don't, so each fighter would he deducted one point in your exampletigermoth87 wrote: ↑10 Mar 2018, 03:58Finn wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 15:52You can’t score a 9-8 it’s the 10 point must system someone has to score 10.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 15:47 Or a 9-8 round. Re: Scoring rounds
9-9 if it's an even round. 9-8 if one fighter wins the round (10-9 with a point off each). 9-7 if a fighter wins the round and scores a knockdown etc.tigermoth87 wrote: ↑10 Mar 2018, 03:58Finn wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 15:52You can’t score a 9-8 it’s the 10 point must system someone has to score 10.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 15:47 Or a 9-8 round. Points deductions for fouls are the only occasion a winner does not get 10 points. If both fighters get deducted, that's exactly what happens, you don't get one deducted then one added back on to cancel out.
