Mikey Garcia Must Decide on Ivan Baranchyk Fight By March 22

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Mikey Garcia is quickly finding out the consequences of holding world titles in multiple weight divisions.

Garcia must decide on whether or not he intends to stay at junior welterweight or move back to lightweight.

On Monday, the IBF gave Garcia a deadline of March 22 to make a decision on their world title.

If he plans to keep the IBF belt, the sanctioning body has already advised him that he needs to make mandatory defense against Ivan Baranchyk (18-0, 11 KOs), who won an eliminator last Friday with TKO win over late replacement Petr Petrov in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Garcia, upon making a decision to remain as IBF champ, would have 30 days to reach an agreement with Baranchyk before a purse bid is called.
---------------------------------
At lightweight, Garcia also has a mandatory order hanging over his head.

The WBC ordered Garcia to fight Jorge Linares (44-3, 27 KOs), who also has the WBA's version of the world title.

My opinion..

Head back down to 135.. He's 30 years old and has had nearly 40 fights. Try unifying at lightweight, Make a name for himself at that weight. He only made 1 title defence each at featherweight and super-featherweight, with 1 he had to vacate for being overweight..

Instead of speeding up in weight (fighting the best out there).. There are plenty good names at lightweight still ..

If Flanagan wins the WBO 140 belt and Wârren can get Garcia over in the UK for a unification, I would personally love that..

Fights Easter.

An easy win over the overrated Easter and another title.

Then it's up to 147.

The fact that Loma just signed to fight Linares changes the landscape. Even though 10 days is VERY short notice I'd like to see Mikey stay at 140 and face Baranchyk then eventually Prograis. By then Loma should be ready to go to 140 and we have our megafight right there!! :box:

Mikey Garcia May Remain at 140-Pounds After Loma-Linares Deal

He was interested in fighting Linares.. He might now stay and fight Baranchyk.

Why? Baranchyk is better than Easter.

Whatever weight he was going off at said a number of things the other night.

Mikey Garcia is a good boxer technically and well trained, you can ruffle his feathers and maybe he needed some of that against Lipinets.
The polish is off the two and a half year layoff and I think he needs to get down to business and start picking his spots in terms of what his career path will be in the short term, what divisions he'll campaign at and who he wants to fight.

Based on what you saw against Yigit, how well would he have done against Garcia?

The biggest shame is that Garcia/Lomachenko won't happen. Would be a huge fight between 2 P4P elites who are around the same size. Fights like that not happening are why boxing sucks.

Probably he would have provided some danger early, but no more.

That's Garcia fault. He's aiming Spence. And that's not a rational option. Garcia will be more likely to get battered, while the fight itself can become less big, than the bout against Loma.

I think there's enough blame to go around. Arum and Haymon don't like to share.
