All time hero - and your favourite fight of theirs?

Post by Ade L »

Mine all time hero is Arturo Gatti - oddly my fave Gatti fight is the first Ward fight (which Gatti lost)

I had alot of boxing heroes, and alot of them were mostly journeymen or fringe contenders like Joe Hipp, Jerry Halstead, etc. then again I grew up in an era when standard television, along with cable, had several boxing shows every week like Tuesday Night Fights (USA), Friday Night Fights (ESPN), etc where such guys were constantly on and were as famous as world champions were. Hell, I remember seeing Mickey Rourke fight exhibition bouts on TV. Great time for being a boxing fan.

My favorite fighter is Tommy Morrison. My favorite fights of him are against Donovan Ruddock, Carl Williams and Joe Hipp. Those are full of action, tension and drama.

Wasn't wannabe boxer Rourke put to sleep in an exhibition by Hearns?

Would have to research this, first I've heard of it. I know he boxed an exhibition with Frank Tate for two rounds, and that was all in fun. From what little bit I've read, Carlos Monzon knocked Rourke out with a single punch in sparring, and Hearns knocked Rourke out in sparring for five minutes.

We have been friends since the mid-80s, and I co-wrote "Chuvalo: A fighter's life" with George in 2013.

The 2 heroes of mine that were in my time as a fan are Gatti and Morales.

Gatti knocking out Wilson Rodriguez is probably my favorite Gatti fight, even though I saw it after the fact.

Morales beating Pacquiao in the 1st fight was OH so sweet.

Maidana beating Broner was very sweet too

And yes I saw the 1st Ward fight Live. It was magical, and probably was one of the key ingredients in making me a fan for life. That was very early in my Boxing fandom, and what more could any fan ever ask for than a fight like that?

Nigel Benn, and as already mentioned the great fight but awful aftermath v McClellan

Thomas Hearns vs Roldan. Not his greatest win by any means but an exciting shootout

JC Chavez vs Rosario. Systematic dismantling of a very good fighter by a great one.

I've several boxing heroes, these three from more modern times were must watch fighters.

I don’t have all time heroes but there were guys who were gifted.

Ike Ibeabuchi vs Chris Byrd… I thought it heralded a beast. Fast, powerful fists.

Foreman vs Frazier 1… I thought “What if this kid could box?”

Lomachenko vs Russell... He stepped it way up from his previous fight, which was a foul filled robbery. He knew he had to be better. Lisa Giampa scored it a draw. The other 2 judges didn't give him the shutout.

Billy Conn vs Bob Pastor. They used to show fights on “Boxing Classics” that aren’t available on Youtube... Conn wasn't brilliant defensively, but had amazingly quick hands... Brilliant combinations.

I think Jack Dempsey’s fight with Fred Fulton would have been interesting to watch. Prime killer.

Jack Johnson vs Tommy Burns and Jim Jeffries. “How do you FEEL Jeff?” Boxing shouldn’t be that serious. It’s not a sword fight or a gun battle. He had fun out there.

Gene Tunney vs Tom Heeney.. But not much is available.

Salvador Sanchez vs Ruben Castillo.. Great fight.

Mike McCallum vs James Toney 1... Their draw... Great fight... Unbelievable pace and big power shots connecting.

Sonny Liston vs Floyd Patterson 1 & 2... Devastation.

Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux… His jab was unreal.

Kovalev vs Ward 1… He beat the fouling punk.

Mikey Garcia vs Adrien Broner… Control of the ring and distance. Brilliant timing.

Keith Thurman vs Robert Guerrero... KT won every round protecting a massive swelling from a clobbering head-butt... Very cool demeanor and great defensive skills.

Larry Holmes vs Marvis Frazier... I like the look he gave him before the fight. The best "You ain't shitt" look I've ever seen.

Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz... "I'm not here to kiss and make up punk."

Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko... The greatest Heavyweight Title Fight I've ever seen... Cold and detached killers.

I realize the Rourke thing was a clusterf**k and not good for the game, but he wasn't completely a celebrity upstart; I believe he did have an amateur career before he started acting; before he started in with the professional nonsense.
