He made the most for Holmes.... 10,000,000... I didn't want to see it at that point... Too many people did.

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Too many people living in the past and making money off the back of his fights. Many thought Ali could roll back the years but he was shot, he should have retired after the Shavers fight. A sad sight to see.

Surprising that he made "only" $1,000,000 for the Lyle fight.

Hard to fathom it isn't it?
Still, he made more than double that for the Bugner fight and 1.5 million for the Wepner fight.

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
What about the Spinks and Shavers fights? Any info on those?
Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Boxing is less about skill and more about personalities that masses of people are drawn to: Sullivan... Johnson... Dempsey... Baer... Louis... Robinson... Ali... Foreman... Tyson... Joshua ... If Joshua were American his following would be unreal.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Mar 2018, 11:18That's $3,628,085.50 todayAmbling Alp II wrote: ↑20 Mar 2018, 10:56 Surprising that he made "only" $1,000,000 for the Lyle fight.
Wilder is something like Tunney and Holmes.... He's good but nobody cares... He busts his ass trying to have personality like Ken Norton did... "Kenny, calm down and just be Ken Norton you dumb shitt. You're not a star man - quit acting."
Joshua will make 10's of millions for Parker and possibly 100 million for Wilder if the fight gets the right kind of promotion and buildup in the US for the PPV... Wilder has a lot of height, reach, speed, power and ability... But nobody likes him... When they fight nationalism will kick in. Many will root for Wilder because he's an American... They never heard him talk.
It's like Dempsey and Tunney... Screw that cold dick Tunney... Where's Dempsey???
If you have Lewis, Holyfield, and Tyson at a roast, Tyson is the guy everybody is drawn to... Everyone will just barely tolerate speeches by Lewis and Holyfield and twitter at their lame jokes.. Tyson has everybody roaring and rolling in the aisles.

Good info. Interesting that he made more as a challenger fighting Liston than he did as Champion fighting Liston.Controversial wrote: ↑19 Mar 2018, 06:39 Found this on another site, I can only assume its correct

I think that was because the gate was small for the rematch. It was held in a small arena and was not promoted very well.

what were his opponent's purse's ?
Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Interesting that Ali only got 200,000 for his Chuvalo rematch and 200,000 for Blue Lewis...
Those turned out to be 2 of his tougher fights against 2 of his heaviest opponents... Ali took some hard head shots from both those guys and both were considered slow and ungainly... Chuvalo was getting old, but I thought he fought one of his better technical fights in the Ali rematch... Offensively that is. He never had a defense.
Chuvalo and Lewis were equivalent to Eric Molina... basically risk free for AJ... He didn't even get hit well and cleared about 6 million with his base purse and share of PPV... They make you pay for a Joshua-Molina fight over there, good grief... Boxing is big in the UK... If Joshua clubs Wilder into the canvas and starts coming here, it will get big here.

If you calculate to today's dollars, that's merely a little over $1.5 MKalan wrote: ↑21 Mar 2018, 18:38 Interesting that Ali only got 200,000 for his Chuvalo rematch and 200,000 for Blue Lewis...

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Hmmm... You're saying 200,000 in '72 was equivalent to 1 and a half million today??? Lets see... Bananas were 20 cents a lb... Now they're 50 cents... gas was about 37 cents as I recall... now it's 2.20... A real good house was about 75,000... Now it's 800,000... A steak dinner at a real good restaurant was 18 to 25 dollars... Now it's 60 dollars...oogiebe wrote: ↑21 Mar 2018, 18:54If you calculate to today's dollars, that's merely a little over $1.5 MKalan wrote: ↑21 Mar 2018, 18:38 Interesting that Ali only got 200,000 for his Chuvalo rematch and 200,000 for Blue Lewis...

Cheap ballpoint pens are about the same price... People always give me expensive pens, then they see me using the super cheap ones... I lose them all the time so I'm glad their cheap... Clothes are about 4 X the cost... It's weird how some things have shot up in price and other things go up slowly. Productivity gains and world trade agreements probably.

$200,000 then or $1.2 million today.
What's the difference. It's nothing.
Considering what this era's superstars have been paid (see Mayweather and Pacquiao) can you imagine what an enormous talent and personality like Ali would rake in today?
He would easily eclipse $1 billion in career earnings.

You need to have longevity at the top to make as much as Mayweather and PacquiaoSenorPipino wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 16:14 $200,000 then or $1.2 million today.

Considering how many punches Ali took upside the head by incompetents who weighed under 200 pounds... He might not even be heard from in an era of giants like the Lennox Lewis's... the Klitschko Bro's... and Anthony Joshua...
The reason Floyd and Manny did so well is they fought until they were FORTY YEARS OLD without losing a step....
In sharp CONTRAST Ali was already beaten to trash when he lost to novice Leon Stinks, 6-0-1, at the age of 36....

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Ali's professional career extended from 1960 to 1981. About 21 years.
His amateur days began in 1954.
So all told, Ali's boxing career last about 27 years.
I would say that qualifies for longevity by most peoples' standards.
Ali would be a billionaire in today's market, even if there's a dearth of quality heavyweights.

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
Heavyweights like Jean Pierre Coopman and Alfredo Evangelista would never get a shot at Joshua today... They'd be a blot on the canvas in 30 seconds and NO commission would allow it... Wepner gettin a shot Joshua???
be serious man... Karl Mildenbooger???
a 30 second job... Too many quality Heavyweights today for ridiculous stinkbomb Heavyweights to get world Title shots.
ALL of May & Pac's fights were big in their last 5 years... Generating 100's of Millions of dollars.... They didn't fight any 5th rate opponents on free TV like Ali did... Ali even got ripped by those guys -- as much as they could rip him with those itty bitty arms and soft punches... They took the violence out of Boxing... When Ali stepped up to Leon Spinks he got beat.

Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
How much did the Nation of Islam take out of each?
Re: Muhammed Ali's purses
It's funny but it was Leonard (Leonard-Duran) not a HW who opened the door to the eight figure payday. Most of the other payday big jumps came from HWs. Sullivan was the first to take it up into the ten thousands; Dempsey to six figures, and Ali/Frazier to multiple millions. But I think it was Leonard who first broke the 10 million mark (guarantee plus PPV revenue share). Then Holyfield took it to 20 million, and finally a mere LW, Floyd Mayweather took it to $100,000,000.
