Re: Boxing trivia-The Archie Moore-Sonny Liston-George Foreman connection
Yes "Dandy"Dick Sadler.
He was Archie Moore's manager and trainer around the time of the Durelle fight.
He was Sonny Liston's trainer/manager when Liston returned from Europe in 1966 up until Liston's loss by Leotis Martin in December 1969
and he became George Foreman's trainer and manager when Foreman turned pro in 1969.
(Foreman was intoduced to him by his boxing coach, when they took him up to Heywood California
to spare with Liston before he went to the Olympics in 1968.

The broken clock is right! (me). I wasn't positive on Moore, but figured it must've been since they worked together after Moore retired. Lucky guess.Caractacus wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 19:02 Yes "Dandy"Dick Sadler.

okay now name the individual who was associated with both Archie Moore's (mid 1930's) and Sonny Liston's (early 1950's) amateur boxing careers.

Clay was the best known Heavyweight Contender in the early 60's.... He's the FIRST guy you associate with the names.
"Archie Moore has been living off the fat of the land .... I'm here to give him his pension plan...
So don't block the aisle and don't block the door .... cuz Archie Moore will fall in 4"
It's interesting.... Although Ali fought Foreman only 12 years after he fought Moore the professional boxing career of Moore started in 1935... and The professional boxing career of of Foreman ended in 1997 -- more than 62 years later.

I always thought it was the Patterson Moore fight that George Foreman said Dick Sadler may have been referring toKalan wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 20:03Clay was the best known Heavyweight Contender in the early 60's.... He's the FIRST guy you associate with the names.

that Sadler knew a light-champion fighter he was training he felt threw a fight.
Maybe he was talking about the fight with Cassius Clay ?(although Foreman didn't mention any names in his book)

Re: Boxing trivia-The Archie Moore-Sonny Liston-George Foreman connection
Archie Moore invited George Plimpton to visit The Salt Mine and this is how he discribed it.
Large rocks painted red with the names of famous fighters written on them such as Sugar Ray Robinson and Stanley Ketchell.
"i noticed one crag on which a rude likeness of him had been chisled out with the legend underneath ALL- TIME K.O CHAMP"
he took me over to a flat terrace, which had been one of the(nude) sunbathing spots-where his name had been painted flat in huge letters.
Where people flying overhead in the air-liners could see it from 32,000 ft.
(I wonder if any of this still exists there?

Re: Boxing trivia-The Archie Moore-Sonny Liston-George Foreman connection
Archie Moore sure as HELL didn't throw the Patterson or Clay fights.... He'd never take the punishment that fell to him in those fights had he intended to lose either one of them... He was hit really good from the opening bell with his super hittable cross-armed defense -- and he never stood the chance of a snowflake in HELL of winning those fights anyway...Caractacus wrote: ↑29 Mar 2018, 11:48I always thought it was the Patterson Moore fight that George Foreman said Dick Sadler may have been referring toKalan wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 20:03Clay was the best known Heavyweight Contender in the early 60's.... Re: Boxing trivia-The Archie Moore-Sonny Liston-George Foreman connection
another person who was associated with all three and Dick Sadler too was welterweight contender
Charlie Ships.
He said in a book that when he sparred with Liston in the early 1960's,
Archie Moore would drop by and he would spar with him too.
Dick Sadler was Shipes manager and trainer,
when Sonny Liston returned from Europe in 1967,
Saddler became his trainer,
Charlie Ships was also George Foreman's co-trainer in the first part of his boxing career in early 1970's,
and also when George Foreman made a comeback in the 1980's.
When Foreman and Sadler started to have a falling out around the time just before the title fight in 1973
with Frazier,it was Shipes who suggested that they bring Archie Moore on team Foreman.
I think after The Bungle in the Jungle in Oct 1974,
Foreman dismissed Sadler and I think Moore too but kept Charlie Shipes on board with Gil Clancey.
Archie Moore was also on team Foreman in the comeback, but due to Moore's erratic behaviour
around that time he was asked to leave politely around the time Foreman was training for his title fight with Evander Holyfield.
Shipes then became Foreman's co-trainer with Angelo Dundee for the Holyfield fight.

Re: Boxing trivia-The Archie Moore-Sonny Liston-George Foreman connection
another person who should be mentioned is Sandy Saddler.
He had turned pro in 1944 and was training at Stillman's Gym
when Archie Moore came there in 1945.
They both had the same fight manager Charley Johnston.
Archie Moore use to spar with Sandy Saddler there
and helped him in preparing to fight for the title against Willie Pep in 1948.
(and giving him boxing tips)
Saddler was a close personal friend of Archie Moore and was always in his corner
he was also a member of " team George Foreman" back then at least in the early 1970'S.
I don't know how much if any he may have been associated with team Liston back in the late 1960's,
but reportedly Dick Sadler was his cousin.
