The Mitchell Haters

Post by big bad bill »

For all his Brashness,Cockiness and Confidence and the fact he could have most pobs beaten all the fellas he as fought in the same night........can none of you see that this Kid has got real talent just waiting to explode......................Forget all the chest beating and stuff that just comes with age...........i have never seen any 9 fight novice take care of the fighters they are fed with such devastating ease
Before it just becomes the fashion to slate him lets try to judge him on his boxing skills alone

Mitchell can definitely fight. Unfortunately his dodgy antics rub people up the wrong way which automatically brings out the negative comments about his overall ability.

"He'll get KO'd when he steps up" is a typical reaction. Not many people remember to include "I hope" on the end though.

With the matches they are putting him in at the moment, he could go 200-0

BBB - not disagreeing he has potential, but trying to judge his ability to win genuine world titles based on who he has faced so far is like me claiming I am ready to bat for England because I manged to score a half century last weekend against Fat Bill's pub side.

He may grow out of the cockiness but it is so tiresome. It doesn't seem to me like youthful exuberance - more outright nastiness.

Must....refrain....from........slating...........Kev......in........Bollocks, i just can't do it. Can he really fight? His opposition has hardly shown us that, has it?

It's impossible to seperate his antics from his boxing because the two go hand in hand. Once he steps through those ropes, that's when i judge him as a boxer. Unfortunately that's when most of the bad comes through. Hitting people when they're down, jumping around like he's just beat Morales (when in fact he's just beaten the local butcher's vertically challenged older brother), and generally acting like a knob doesn't endear him to anyone. The way he behaves makes people dislike him, people on here don't hate him just because everyone else does, we're generally smart enough to judge him for ourselves. And as far as i know, the fashionable view is that he has talent, but he's a right arsehole.

An arsehole with the ability to knock guys off their feet is exactly what British boxing needs if you ask me. A nasty personality is a heck of a lot better than no personality!

I have been a reader on this site for some time and struggle to understand some of the personal criticism labelled him.

I first watched one of his first amateur bouts on a Hornchurch club show and he could have been no more than 11 or 12, even at that age you could tell what a talent he was and since then I've kept an eye on his progress. He cleaned up everything as junior before winning a full ABA title at 18.

I have spoke to him many times at amateur shows and he is a genuinely nice polite kid. Certainly in person he bears no resemblance to the character portrayed by the odd poster on here.

Admittedly his opposition so far has been poor, but what prospect these days are matched any differently? David Haye springs to mind.

It is not who he is beating at this stage, but it is the ease in which he is doing it. He must be ceating some impression due to the response he gets on this forum alone, if he was someone of such average ability and potential why are we all talking about him?

His big tests are still to come and lets hope he is moved up step by step with each fight and can go on to much bigger and better things. I wish him all the best.

If that interview went ahead with his management team being there/aware of it, he is being very badly advised. If he wants to criticse other boxers fair enough (although I still think that makes you look low class) but people in other sports??? Still as Messrs Beckham, Henman and Button are mutli-millionaires and Froch probably hasn't earned enough yet to buy his Mum's council hoese, I'll doubt they will lose any sleep.

I doubt they'll have even heard of Froch, much less give a rats ass for what he has to say.

Kit I have nothing against Carl at all, I think he is a decent prospect and have often said as much however I cant condone idiocy like that.

To say you are the most talented sportsman in Britain is not going to win you fans. In fact its lost him one.

I personally take it as an afront to those with far more talent and gracious nature, for example Kelly Holmes, the whole of the English World cup winning rugby team, mathew pincent, freddie flintoff to name but a few of thousands who have a better claim to be britainss most talented sportsperson.

These people are winners proven world class operators and who the f*ck does Carl froch think he is to compare himself to these guys after doing what exactly? Bugger all yet.
KEEP YOUR GLOATING TIL YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO GLOAT ABOUT.

the one exception being Ali and Ali he sure aint.

J, i think Kit is talking about Mitchell.

And Kilburn, i agree to some extent. Britain needs talented, marketable fighters, but (and this is just me) i'd hate to see success for our boxers come on the back of fouls, and poor sportsmanship.

Mitchell is brash and lary after his wins. Some love it, some don't. I wouldn't mind if his antics came after decent wins - but he's doing it after knocking over guys with chronic heart disease.
Peter Buckley could knock over those same guys.
Then we have Sky Sports showing compilations of his KO's as if they mean something. It's a con. And until Kevin starts knocking over healthy opponents, forget it.

Sky have been screwing fans for years and costs us some of the biggest matches out there in this day and age of boxing. Video sellers would have hatton - witter 2 in their collection if it wasnt for SKY.

Was a bit late with that post, I was actually still talking about Mitchell.

Agree totally on the Froch front though. How can Carl even compare himself to (or consider himself above) the top people in british sports people who have reached the top of their proffession, when he is struggling to out point Charles Adamu. But at least he got himself some national newspaper coverage from his statement. Looking like an idiot but exposure none the less.

Back to Kevin, I am sure he would fight anyone who was put in the opposing corner. I'm sure Kevin like most prospects would love to fight sterner opposition but unfortunately he don't make the fights, Dean Powell does.

For the first five fights Mitchell was easily the best and most entertaining young prospect in Britain.

But after 9 journeymen (probably an insult to journeymen) the novelty has worn thin.

If he gets a couple on names on his record and avoids the Mickey Mouse titles I will gladly join the fan club. :)

Well, Froch's comments were in the Sun, so they're just as likely to be a bunch of made-up arse, or the interviewer putting forward a load of leading questions and filling in the gaps, as what Carl actually siad word-for-word.

As for Mitchell; I hope he is talented. The more world-class British boxers the better. But I have no idea from what I've seen on fight school or whatever, because he's yet to fight someone with a pulse. Lets just wait and see whether he will make the grade, or just be another decent domestic fighter, eh?

Kit - you are right about Dean Powell. I think he is really struggling as the SN matchmaker. There seems to be a tendency by him to avoid using some of the British "journeymen" agasinst up and coming fighters - (incidentally, I mean no disrepsect to any boxers who fall into this category; without them boxing would be immeasurably poorer), using instead hapless European fighters. If Mitchell was fighting the likes of Alan Temple, Gary Hibbert, Anthony Maynard etc, fighters we have seen during their careers we would be able to judge him so much better.

My problem with Mitchell is the amount of hype compared with amount of talent on show. From the start I was reading articles on major boxing websites with quotes from FW talking about him like he was the second coming of Ray Robinson. Then when I saw him I didn't get what all the fuss was about , sure fastish hands but not exceptional speed. Power? He doesn't look like a thunderous puncher to me despite Skys obvious attempts to fool people into thinking he is a massive puncher. To say he has been fighting the lowest of the low is an understatement, they are an insult to normal journeymen. Kevin seems to lack composure in the ring, he gets riled if one of these guys happens to touch his face and comes wading in. He would have benefited greatly if he had have stayed amatuer and worked on his technique more. I don't think ive seen him throw a jab yet, he's just waded in against these guys who are not punching back.

Then youve got his irritating attitude on top of this. He's lucky he didn't get thrown out last time for hitting that guy on the ground. Roy Jones, unbeaten and at the top of his game lost his unbeaten record for far less.

He's got ability but they need to up the level of competition to 'breathing'.

In his last fight (was ringside) I was sat with my notepad reading what he was doing and everytime he loaded up and threw a left hook I a) read it before he threw it and b) got bored...

Not complaining about his chest beating, I just hope he is doing that when he takes on good fighters (when indeed).

But, fighting guys like he is now, is doing him no good whatsoever and in fact, he actually looks like he's regressed.

Simple answer is to put him in with someone who will take him six rounds and not let him have it all his own way. Then you'll see improvements.
