Adrien Broner vs Jessie Vargas

Post by handsofstone »

This Saturday on Sky, I think this is a decent fight actually, I'm not usually a fan of Vargas but I'm struggling to see how this one pans out, Broner was hopeless against Garcia but he didnt take many clean shots from Mikey, apparently he's knuckling down in training and is saying the right things about wasting his potential, I haven't been paying too much attention so I may be wrong and he's still behaving like a helmet??

Vargas was dominated from Pacquiao last time I seen him, he was in decent form going into that one but Pacquiao showed his limitations, Broner done a better job on Allakhverdiev than Vargas, not that it means anything

Broner can be lazy and Vargas is a pretty textbook boxer who gets to work early, if he can build up a healthy lead he could take it but for me even though Broner's skills are overated, he's still a sharp boxer and has more in his locker than Vargas, think he wins it on points

The fight itself will probably be rank but Davis/Cuellar should be fun and Jermall Charlo is on

Interesting fight. I’m leaning towards Broner on points, but wouldn’t be at all surprised if he gets outworked.

As a whole, your right- the card is pretty decent.
As for Broner, who knows :maybe:
In the lead up to the fight, all those questions we have about him (dedication, heart, motivation) have been answered by him and his team. Now whether that is just promotional hype, or a genuine change in his outlook, only the actual fight will answer those questions.
I'm looking forward to finding out..

Vargas has size and reach on Broner but he doesn't really fight a good long fight. In his big fights he was getting outboxed for the most part. Pacquiao gave him a 12-0 lesson. Bradley won almost every round. Sadam Ali was winning rounds but getting caught occasionally and eventually got stopped. Vargas best punch is the straight right but if theres one punch Broner has covered it's that straight right. Maidana fought like a man possessed and threw strange looping right hands that caused problems for Mayweather, nevermind Broner.

Can Vargas outbox Broner? I'm not sure. Broner has a decent jab and I can see his defence working against Vargas. It may be the case that Vargas wins the fight on workrate but Broner should be able to find him with counters along the way to make it pretty competitive. I can't really pick a winner in this one. Mikey Garcia stayed on the outside for most of the fight and flat out ran for the last few rounds vs Broner. Vargas can't fight that fight imo. He also can't fight the fight Porter or Maidana fought to beat Broner.

I suppose I lean towards a Broner UD.

Nice analysis :TU:
I agree Vargas can throw a lovely straight right with purpose, but Broner does have a decent (Mayweather-esk) shoulder roll which should be an effective defence. I can't pick a winner because I don't know what Broner will turn up on the night. The best Broner will win on points an possibly a late KO, the Broner of late may get stopped.

I suppose Vargas could just try Granados tactics and his extra size and power could be a problem but fighting on the inside is broners fight so you have to say broner would find some nice counters along the way.

Worst line up of the year for me so far.

Broner-Vargas has some interest but the other fights are hopeless.

Davis will fight nobody of note until Garcia and Loma are too old or look vulnerable. Charlo similarly seems to be being protected.

These guys should be hovering around the p4p ratings...

Broner is certainly an enigma in the ring (will leave his out of the ring stuff to the side)...... not sure I have seen a fighter look so good at high level and then just seem to become a gate keeper so quickly. When he was coming through and his reign at Lightweight - I really thought he was going to be the P4P guy we'd be talking about post Mayweather - but it has never really happened.

I’m edging Broner on Points, but as already stated it depends which Broner turns up.

Went for Vargas by close decision in PTBF but starting to sway towards Broner.

Would like to see AB get back in the game and get a stoppage here rather than just a boring points win. Fancy him to win but I'd like to see him busier and push for the stoppage and get himself back in the mix.

Can't stick the prick tbh but he's a talent and it would be good to see him in some big fights when he's got his head screwed on properly.

Broner needs to win this just to make his child support obligations.

I don't have the time, patience or the hand puppets to explain that one to you Wes, so I will let The Rock take over;
