Azumah Nelson v Jeff Fenech

Post by Taansend »

OK, it's a tad odd for the British/Irish section but I watched this live (in England) 28 years ago & thought it was a f*cking robbery then but maybe I'll see it different now.

Before I watch it I'll put it here. Please score it round by round & give us your scores. If you want to be lazy & just say who you thought won that's also good but RbR is better.

For the record Nelson was 33 years old & 34-2-1 with his losses being to Salvador Sanchez (aged 23) & Pernell Whittaker.

Fenech was 27 & 25-0 & had been a Bantie, Super Bantie & Feather Champ. He was amazing. They both were amazing.

Enjoy

It was fun to watch a fight I hadn't seen in 28 years :D

I didn't score it at the time but thought Fenech won.

Tonight I scored it. Azumah won the 1st two rounds & there were two other rounds that were close but Fenech won 8 rounds easily in my opinion.

I would love to hear what others think

Fenech definitely won it. Nelson was lucky the referee did not stop the fight.

Fenech was robbed, I went to rematch in Melbourne, Nelson clobbered him, it was a sad sight.

Didn't Nelson claim to have had malaria in that fight?

Fenech was brilliant in the first fight and even rocked Nelson in the final round to make sure of the win, so the draw was horribly unjust. Nelson was brilliant in the rematch but he always was brilliant in rematches. Two great fights (I won't mention the third.)

I thought Fenech won the first fight clearly, Nelson pretty much stayed in the same corner for the whole fight and allowed Fenech to bully him all night, played right into his hands, its a scandal that Fenech only got a draw

Much improved from Nelson in the rematch though, boxing ring centre and never allowing Fenech to pin him down, and a cracking stoppage to, just shows you how tactics can alter a fight

I bet theres a lot of people who've never seen the rubber match coz it was years later but mark my words its a great fight fought at a terrific pace

I think Nelson said later he had a virus in the first fight. Normally you’d think that was an excuse but the way he won the return seems that he was spot on. Certainly didn’t expect that result in the rematch
