It's about time the board gives Josh Warrington respect

Post by Andrew »

For the past year I felt Josh would beat Lee Selby and he proved a LOT of people wrong last night. He was 4/1 with bookmakers which makes last night a massive upset.

I've been clear that I've thought Selby was over rated, whilst maintaining that he is a good fighter. People all over the Internet have said Selby would school Josh, Frampton, Oscar Valdez etc and now that Josh dominated him he needs to be given credit for a true world class victory.

Sure Josh is a big ticket seller and a lot of idiots go to his fights, but he always comes across as a sound lad. A lot of fighters get things handed to them on a plate in this sport. I'm not naming names as I could be here all day. Josh is NOT one of them, for a start he come through the small hall shows with Steve Wood and got his chance on Sky as the away fighter in Hull against Samir Mouniemme

In an era where fighters can become world champion by email and winning vacant belts against wasters Josh has gone the traditional route. English,British,Commonwealth, European and now world. He beat a true world class fighter for the belt not an easy belt grab.

Well done Josh :TU:

Yeah fair play to Warrington, I definitely underestimated him. Although I must admit I still don’t rate him particularly highly - last night’s bout didn’t look like 2 world levels fighters.

He was terrific, perfect game plan carried out to perfection. Selby never got a solid grip on the fight all night. Would love to see him fight Carl Frampton and I think it could be the right time for him to cause another upset.

He's had mine all along. Liked him since I saw him beat Mouniemne.

Haven't had a chance to watch yesterdays fight yet. Will do so today before work.

was seriously underrated (and selby a bit over), only at the last minute did i sense any notable amount of ppl coming around. so many ppl for a while acted like he could hardly fight at all and would be found out vs anyone decent, but now hes gotten brit, euro, and world titles

Yip deserves respect. Got his game plan spot on and was in terrific shape. Also went the traditional route to a world title which is nice to see.

I think Frampton destroys him next if they go at it though.

I wouldn't mind seeing Warrington v Quigg either if Frampton isn't a goer.

I tend to agree with what you say, yes most people have not rated Warrington on here and almost everyone favoured Selby to beat him quite convincingly last night.

I'm not sure why people havent taken to Warrington on here, maybe because he's from Leeds and does have a strong fanbase that in times have caused a few issues on shows along with issues at football matches.

Warrington in my eyes is a decent fighter, his record proves he is not a devastating knock out puncher and possibly again people maybe would like him more if he did have that power punch behind him.

People have said Warrington has a big mouth but again ive not heard anything from him that would cause offence.

Since my son got to know the Warrington's, ive followed him more and got to like him in the ring, I personally have never met Josh but my son has and my grandson too. Josh has done some good stuff, that I know of including visiting squaddies at York Fulford Barracks. His dad Sean whom I have seen in his taxi a year or so ago seems a genuine bloke. They havent come from posh background and seem a very working class family from Leeds.

My son told me the other day that he had spoken to Sean and he had said camp had gone good and they were confident going into the fight.

I was sat on the fence really but leaning towards a points victory for Josh as he had home advantage but we really dont fully know how good the lad is.

It was a decent fight last night and Josh does deserve praise and congratulating for that victory. Its a waste of time saying 'ifs and ands' as josh won the fight fair and square. The points verdict wasnt the fight I saw as I had Warrington at least 4 rounds in front. If Josh had had that big punch the fight would have been over before any points verdict but Josh has a game plan and sticks to it. I think they know that most of his fights are going the distance so its upto his opponents to finish him before the points are counted.

Leeds will be celebrating this morning and so they should.

Josh is a credit to British boxing.

Followed him since he won the English title away from home against my cousin. His come up the hard way which has deffo helped him as his stepped up the levels. I've always said I fancied him to beat Selby with his work rate. But last night he showed how skillfull he is on the back foot as well. Chuffed for him and his dad as they r sound blokes.

This.

I knew he was fit as a butcher's dog & hard as nails (you've gotta be to fight like that), but his gameplan of making Selby lead & then exploding with straight shots fvcked Selby from the off & I was impressed the way he stuck to it.

Frampton wouldn't destroy him.

I think Warrington might pick up another big win if they fought.

Quigg would be a bloody fun fight.

I wonder how Eddie is feeling after watching him win.

Frampton does him. Perhaps 'destroys' was the wrong choice of word but Frampton certainly beats him.

Selby was overrated and so is Frampton.

Warrington is still underrated.

Probably is a bit underrated, well going by the polls last night he is. Frampton is a better fighter and hits harder. Hopefully it's made by the end of the year and we can see how it goes down but I'd fancy Carl strongly.

Frampton's only stopped one fighter in the last 4 years and that was over 3 years ago. He's not stopped anyone since he's moved to featherweight. Frampton is hitting the deck more than his opponents.

Frampton's power is decent, but I think people overrate it.

Right now I'd favour Warrington.

To be fair though,in the last 3 years Frampton has boxed a mixture of unbeaten fighters, boxers that have never been stopped or a boxer that has only been stopped once,so it's not a true reflection of punch power, personally i thin'k he'd walk into Warrington with no fears as to what may be coming back at him.

And he'll hit the deck.

Frampton can't walk though Warrington. He doesn't have the chin or the punch volume to do it.

So Warrington the big puncher will do something Santa Cruz and Donaire couldn't ?

Did Frampton try to walk through those two with no respect for their power?

If Frampton respects Warrington he is unlikely to get knocked down. If he underestimates him I can see him going down and maybe getting stopped.

It's not about Frampton being levels above now. Warrington has shown he is at world level and Frampton can't win against Warrington anyway he chooses. He's already struggled against fighters who aren't as good as Warrington on paper.

Thought selby would win with plenty in hand. Full respect to Warrington I think it's a real 50/50 with Frampton. Still think he's a cock though and will be cheering Frampton on if the fight gets signed
