Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
I was just watching the Leonard - Duran 3 fight in 1989 and the ring looked very large to me. Anyone know what the size of the ring was? Also, the gloves looked big. Anyone know the glove size?

Leonard up to his tricks again.

Leonard beat Duran with ease in that one, snoozer of a fight though
Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Duran would have agreed to any conditions for that fight. The IRS was after him for a lot of money and Roberto needed a big money fight.SenorPipino wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 14:45Leonard didn't really require tricks in 1989 to defeat the ghost of Duran.
But any fighter is wise to grab whatever advantages are available.

Duran was guaranteed about $7.5 million for fight 3 with Leonard. He owed the IRS $1.8 million in taxes and penalties, because the IRS had supposedly overpaid Duran by millions on a tax refund. Duran ignored IRS request to return the mistaken money, but eventually agreed to have the debt collected from his purse.

Tedious & pointless fight.handsofstone wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 14:49 Leonard beat Duran with ease in that one, snoozer of a fight though
It was basically, Duran couldn't & Leonard couldn't anymore either.
Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Ideally both of them should have retired before this fight or at least right after that. Both were far past prime and Duran was especially worn out.

And yet, earlier in the year, Duran fought brilliantly in beating the bigger, stronger Iran Barkley in an absolutely incredible fight.
That effort may have been the finishing touch on the true Duran. He pretty much went through the motions for the remainder of his career.
Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Apparently, Leonard was taking no chances. It looked like a bigger ring and bigger gloves and 12 rounds rather than 15. Also, a catchweight of 162 lbs, even though it was for a WBC Super Middleweight title which is usually at 168 lbs. Duran was coming off one of the biggest wins of his career against Iran Barkley, and was no doubt celebrating big time. So, the catchweight was not in the contract to help Duran.
Leonard had an 8 inch advantage in reach over Duran, and kept away for most of the fight. His corner kept telling him to stay away and not try to get too macho. At one point the crowd started booing, and this seemed to bother Ray a little bit. His corner said to not pay attention to the crowd.
In the 11th round, Leonard got a little too close to Roberto and caught a right hand that opened a cut near his left eye. In the last round, another cut happened near his right eye. Leonard needed about 40 stitches after the bout.

Probably the lighter, the better for Roberto.Scypion wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 17:28 Apparently, Leonard was taking no chances. It looked like a bigger ring and bigger gloves and 12 rounds rather than 15. Duran was a stretched 5'7" An extra 6 pounds at the super middle limit wouldn't have been in his best interest.
He only weighed 158 for the Leonard fight, about 1 1/2 pounds heavier than the Barkley fight.
It wasn't the weight that hindered Duran that night. He just seemed disinterested.
Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Duran fought Jeff Lanas and won a close split decision before his fight with Barkley. I doubt if he was celebrating as much after the Lanas fight as he was after the Barkley fight. Hence, I doubt that he had to shed as much weight.SenorPipino wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 18:08Probably the lighter, the better for Roberto.Scypion wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 17:28 Apparently, Leonard was taking no chances. Yeah. What a beautiful ending of the career it could have been. But it wasn't over and the rest was absolutely unnecessary.SenorPipino wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 17:18And yet, earlier in the year, Duran fought brilliantly in beating the bigger, stronger Iran Barkley in an absolutely incredible fight.

Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
Duran did have a good fight with Hector Camacho, even though he was 45 years old. Some thought he should have gotten the decision including none other than Sugar Ray Leonard who said that Camacho got an early Christmas present with the decision.
That led to Ray's fight with the 34 year old Camacho when the 40 year old Leonard was stopped by Hector.

Looked good vs paz in the first fight which I thought he won
Re: Leonard vs Duran 3 - Ring Size and Glove Size.
The full fight is on YouTube somewhere. Maybe they mention it during the broadcast. I can't bear to see it again myself, even though it is almost 30 years on. I was sure Duran was going to have the fight of his life and avenge himself for New Orleans. Oh well.

Thanks, but I have seen the fight there and I don't remember any mention of those things.
I am sure that Duran was celebrating big time after his big win over Barkley, and gained a lot of weight, which I am sure that is why the catchweight of 162 lbs. was put into the contract. As said before, Duran would have agreed to any conditions (big ring, big gloves, 12 rounds instead of 15, and the catchweight) because he needed the money.
If you wanted to make the big money, you would have to fight Sugar Ray Leonard, but you had to play by his rules.
