Anyone remember this kid?
Son of a Filipina & a black US serviceman he won the 140 title aged 19 (2nd youngest after Benitez) in 1992 when he went to Japan to stop the hard punching Akinobu Hiranaka who had stopped the great Edwin Rosario in 92 seconds - which was on a bill that also included Chavez, Julian Jackson & Tony Tucker in Mexico.
East was meant to be an easy 1st defence but won by 11th round stoppage. He then lost the title in his first defence in Argentina to Juan Martin Coggi. However US news picked up that he'd never met his dad & a tv crew followed him as he met the man for the first time.
His dad died a few months later though.
Anyway, East is now a trainer in Vegas & I came across this video of him training a prospect. I doubt if he'd make 140 now though.
He was also part of Donaires team a while back.

Morris East
Re: Morris East
Absolutely remember him. I remember watching both he and Carlos Elliott (who didn't reach the same heights) climb the OPBF rankings and was surprised he beat Hiranaka for the title. Went back and watched that fight a few months ago, but have never found a copy of the Coggi fight anywhere. Would love to see it.
Re: Morris East
His fight with Hiranaka was a gut-wrenching war and he needed a rest afterwards but he didn't take one and dropped the belt to the clever Coggi.
