paddy barnes vs cristofer rosales (wbc title)

Post by jamamb »

just learned this is happening on the frampton/fury bill. very interested in these types of match ups where one guy with less pro experience takes a huge step up

rosales is 3.5 inches taller and he dropped selby and stopped higa after outboxing him. between those he went to italy and stopped a then unbetaen local based fighter. hes not bad at all and i feel really earned his title.

tbh, i havent rreally at all been impressed with barnes. little power and very amateur style. he had a tough enough time with that old bald italian guy. barnes would do very well to win this i feel. his opponent is bigger, harder punching , and far more experienced as a pro, with some good road wins

Interesting fight this. Maybe too soon for Barnes but I wouldn't write him completely off. Rosales win against Higa was a bit of a shock but in hindsight Higa obviously had issues behind the scenes in the build up and looked ghastly at the weigh in yet still failed to make weight. Looking forward to this one!

Ps. Anyone know what's happening with Selby? Is he injured?

Paddys an arsehole, but hes a tough little fornicator not alot of power but hes relentless with good shot selection, i think he will do the job here.

I thought Barnes pulled out a cracking KO in his last fight, doubled up the hook to head and body, still I don't think he's a puncher and I don't think he's that strong either, i'd like to see him pull this off but unless the judges do a bit of homecooking ive got to go with Rosales, maybe even by stoppage, Rosales lost widely to Selby but did put Andrew on his arse in the 1st, Rosales also gave Yafai a tough fight as well, never seen the win over Higa

Barnes isn't a world level pro IMO, not yet anyway, I thought he could've easily lost to Olteanu and I can see Rosales being a level above him, have a sneaky feeling he'll break Barnes down in the second half

Im counting on this being fight of the weekend.

Ive seen bits of Rosales.Obviously cant read too much into the higa win but even against selby he was bringing it.

Barnes has a lot to prove here he will hear the criticism recently.Hoping this fires Paddy up and we get a great scrap.

This fight will open the broadcast on BT Sport 1 at half 7..

Waaren is buzzing.. He thinks, because of the Chelsea vs. Arsenal game prior to the card starting, the football fans will keep watching after the final whistle and even catch the opening fight on their telecast.

I still think FW has gone about this wrong. He has tonnes of fighters on the undercard. He could easily have had them fight on BN from 5pm or whatever.

That’s the thing with BN going to pot - and BT taking over we miss all the early fights we used to get on BN from 5.30/6pm.

I think Rosales will grind out a close win. Fair chance he could get stiffed on the cards. Hope Barnes hasn't cut any corners in training because it'll probably be a tough tough night.

3/1 Barnes on points looks the value bet to me. Home dodgy decision.

Didn't see barnes most recent fight but haven't been impressed with him up until this point in the pro's. Did he look that much improved? The guy he ko'd has an SD with Rosales only a few months prior, however a significant factor would seem to be is he initally missed weight by 4lbs against barnes, and then in his next fight after barnes also got stopped again.

His conditioning better be spot on because this wee dude will be on him for the first bell and won't let up. Barnes doesn't look to have much power to keep him honest. Good stoppage in his last outing though to be fair. Picked his shots well. Rosales is a vastly improved fighter and hungry. Really looking forward to this. I'm gonna go for Rosales in a late KO but that's a complete stab in the dark. Can see both of them hitting the deck as well. Hope I'm wrong and Barnes does the business.

Barnes is really gritty , can’t see him getting stopped , will Rosales get a decision in Belfast?

kind of reminded me of the casimero vs edwardd matchmaking, just was hard to see past a champ who is far more experience, has good wins on the road, much bigger puncher, and not a bad boxer himself.....although edwards actually seems better to me then paddy does, paddy just not suited for pros

in these cases the challenger was just outmatched against guys who were legit good fighters and earned there belts, and not just paper champs

Can see the point you are trying to make but Barnes needed to be thrown in because of his age. It was now or never. Plus Rosales isn't exactly proven at world level. When he won the title Daigo Higa was literally a corpse.

I think Michael Conlan could find himself in a similar situation at some point.

The Edwards Casimero fight was just ridiculous matchmaking. Amongst the worst I have seen.

lol the point i was trying to make was never 'this shouldnt have happened', because obvs paddys older for a novice pro and tbh may not really even be world title wining material ever, so take what shot you can before some euro level guy beats you etc. but it was still obviously a very tough match up with a lot of clear advantages for the champ, beating a depleted higa is still way more meaningful then just scraping by vs silvio oltaneu

Paddy awesome and at his peak at around 2014/2015 IMO. He was arguably one of the best P4P amateur fighters during the WSB.
A mixture of weight problems/ being past his peak and not suited to the pros has been his downfall.

Going to give him a pass though. His amateur career was stellar and his talent and amateur record are SUPERB.

Personally I always thought he turned pro because he fancied the Zou Shiming fight (Another who didn’t fit as a PRO-Paddy could of beat him).
As soon as Zou lost the title I thought the chances of finding someone as weak had gone.

A Zou Shiming-Paddy fight could of been sold as a big money spinner for Paddy. Shame it didn’t come off.

Great career Paddy. :TU:

I think people considered Rosales a bit of a Breidis Prescott, lethal with straight power shots but otherwise a plodder.

And yet, we all saw how Prescott v Khan panned out, Amir punished for his amateur habits.., and maybe history repeated itself a bit.

Rosales reminded me of Prescott during the Selby defeat. Dangerous but vulnerable to being outboxed. But appeared very adept inside, during the Higa fight. Obviously we’ve seen him vs opponents who don’t suit him, and those who do, with mixed results. The repertoire was very good vs Higa, and while the Japanese fighter had poor preparation and issues, it was a chance for Rosales to develop...

its true that selby might just be all wrong for rosales, and who knows, maybe selby just so happens to be the best in the world at the weight

on the flip side, rosales has been on the type of run since there fight that can really see a fighter grow, hes been very active (5 fights to selbys 1), on the road , and facing a good mix of opponents and especially vs higa got a lot of good work in and was able to use some good boxing tools. keep in mind that he was also just 22 or something when he fought selby, who is 6 years older, so he may now be hitting his stride and coming into his peak

would be an interesting fight even though selby clearly won the first one
