Usyk now is an Undisputed Unbeaten Cruiserweight Champion of the World.

Why wouldn't Andre Ward want to fight him ?

Usyk is the better, bigger boxer. Only boxer I'd put money on thoroughly outboxing Ward. I'd say Usyk wins this one by stoppage while not looking stellar.

I think Ward is better p4p. But the size difference is significant, and I don't see Ward overcoming it.

oleksandry usyk is more of a hw then a lhw. 6'3, 78 inch reach, and a big frame (ward is 6 feet, 71 inch reach, fought mostly at 168). he fought at shw in the world series of boxing and handily beat joe joyce and 3 time world super hw amateur champ magmedrosal

of course its a different dynamic vs a smaller quicker guy, but the reality is in usyk your looking at a skilled p4p level guy who is A LOT bigger. i would lean to him. i also think usyk would easily beat kovalev, certainly not having the problems ward did

also, ward is pretty physical boxer and not a pure slickster. i think hed struggle to bully bigger guys, it would at least make him adjust his style imo. i dont think he style meshes as well with a guy like usyk as toneys counter punching did with a come forward, easy to hit sugger like jirov

No, not at all. If Ward didn't retire, I'd still have Usyk p4p #1. This CW division is a lot more skilled than the SMW division that Ward cleaned out.

Three pertinent facts to consider...

Andre Ward has never been a cruiserweight.

Andre Ward is retired.

This is a silly thread topic! :TU:

If the fight was in Las Vegas they'd hire a referee who'd disqualify Usyk for repeatedly hitting above the belt or moving around too much or something. If today's fight was in Vegas the judges would have given it to Gassiev.

PS. Do you know what the Iron on Gassiev's trunks mean? It's not his nickname.

Close fight IMO. I doubt Usyk’s power advantage would be a big factor - after all it wasn’t really when Ward fought Kovalev. Reach and height would definitely play a role with hand speed, skill level and general movement at sort of similar level.

Ward is too small. He'll need to get inside and that won't happen. Usyk will circle and shoot from the distance, he won't hurt Ward much and maybe even won't score a lot of clean shots, but he will just be more active, effective and unattainable for Ward.

Ward would not be able to hurt Usyk with his limited power.. Also the reach advantage would be too big. Usyk KTFOs Ward pretty easily imo. The only Light Heavyweights that would be able to compete with Usyk at Cruiser are probably Gvozdyk and Bivol simply because their body size could actually accommodate the extra 25 pounds in a somewhat beneficial way.

..Ward has probably as much of a chance against Usyk, as Usyk has against Joshua..

Ward is a natural super middleweight. Asking him to beat a guy who is about to be a heavyweight is a bit silly. Their body types are totally different.

Yep. As we all know, when a boxer retires, they never, EVER make a comeback. Good thinking. You truly are enlightened. :TU:

As great as Ward is/was, the size difference would be too big an obstacle for him to overcome. Ward could probably beat plenty of Cruisers with raiding tactics, but Usyk's footwork makes him the most difficult fighter in the division to employ those tactics against. For all his skills Ward is actually a very physical fighter and as clever as he his on the inside/in the clinch, its hard to see him being as successful with that all the way up at 200lbs. At the very least Usyk outworks him for a decision.

The same Andre Ward that could not convincingly beat Kovalev?

Against guy who has 3 inches and 25 pounds on him?

I know who my money would be on.

Anyways Ward is retired and if we got any luck he will remain that way
